Colorado Springs Chapter

March 2010

Spot Light On...

Spotlight on....

outdoor_pic_kate1.jpg   Kathryn Flobeck - Aqua Prima Center

After retiring from public education, my husband and I moved from Albuquerque, N.M. to Colorado Springs.  I had always belonged to professional organizations and immediately inquired as to the best one for me to belong to.  Perhaps some of you remember M.J. Larson who had been a long time member of EWI.  She immediately said “EWI is the very best”.  I attended a meeting and have been a member since 1997.  M.J. was right.  I have enjoyed every moment of my membership.  Yes, it has been hard at times to find the money for the membership but I have never regretted one minute.  It is not the networking nor the professional development, although they are important, but the members of the organization that bring me back every year.  They have been the support and friends that make it all worth it.

Aqua Prima Center Inc, is a nonprofit think tank for water research and conservation. Donations, gifts, grants, joint ventures, and water projects fund its efforts.  There is a ton of correspondence, record keeping, travel arrangements for conferences, tech paper / speech preparation, and accounting required.  As VP administration, I handle all these details along with lots of other specific project related activities. Aqua Prima has flourished over the last 6 years and we enjoy making contributions to preserving Colorado and protecting The West from impending droughts.

President Audrey Shrive
Aflac Insurance

March - the month that comes in like a lion and out like a lamb. Oh if it would only be so! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've about had my fill of ‘Colorado Winter'! So until we have some warmer temps, I have a great idea to lift your spirits. Bring a guest to the March Madness meeting!

This program of deadly deception and murder mystery is just what the doctor ordered to continue to boost our membership numbers and our mood. Chris Ressler and her awesome committee are doing a first rate job in growing our chapter. The dust is still settling from the renewal process, so I don't have final numbers for you at the time of this writing. This I do know ... no matter where we end up with renewals, there's always room for more!

EWI is such a unique mix of networking, leadership development, and firm promotion; not to mention the friendships and bonds that are forged here! So, pull out your little black books and scour them for potential guest to invite to the March 10 meeting at the Elks Lodge on North Nevada.

This unique performance will involve a lot of audience participation. It will be a team building event that allows our members and guests to work together to solve this "Who Dun It". I am looking forward to this in a BIG way. So, I expect to see you there with guests!

Ways & Means Committee Report

Hello Ladies!

Our 8th Annual Golf Tournament is on Friday, June 4th.

    Re/Max Properties - Ray Shea - $4000
    Re/Max Properties - Bill & Mary-Good Forsythe / Mike Jensen - $3000
    Sinton Dairy - $1000

Our goal is to raise $20,000, so we still have lots of work to do!  We are aiming for 100% participation from our EWI members, so please think about how you would like to be involved - in ways big and small - and email us.

We are adding a Silent Auction to this year's tournament and are very excited about the possibilities this offers!  Please help us in obtaining donations for this.  We will still be awarding door prizes, but a Silent Auction has the potential to generate even more income at the golf tournament.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Mary-Good 719-229-9343 & Elva 719-577-5534

Scholarship Committee:
Hello Everyone,
This year has seen a lot of changes for me and my family. I am part of the 60/60 program between PPCC and UCCS; I can earn 60 credits at PPCC and 60 credits at UCCS to complete a Bachelor's degree.  This fall I made the transition from the Community College to the University. It was a little intimidating, but I am there and loving it. I changed my major from Biology to Geographical Environmental Studies. I really enjoy the new school and new classes.
My son Zak and I stayed busy through the summer camping and fishing. Zak is eight now and in the second grade. We are active with the Cub Scouts and just got back from our first weekend camp. He earned his "Polar Bear" patch. We had to sleep outside, and the temperature had to be below freezing. I'm learning it's not easy to be a Cub Scout! The biggest news is my eldest daughter welcomed baby Chael to their family Aug. 23rd, he is so perfect!
Thank you so much for the scholarship and the support you all offer. I feel very fortunate to be a scholarship recipient from such a wonderful organization like EWI, and look forward to seeing everyone in December.

2009 ASIST Scholarship Recipient, Kris Gudahl

Cell Phones for Soldiers and The Springs Funeral Services

More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers and The Springs Funeral Services are calling on all Americans to support for these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. Cell Phones for Soldiers hopes to collect over 50,000 cell phones this year to help keep troops connected with their families.

"Over the past few years, we have been amazed by the generosity of others. But, we have also seen the need to support our troops continue." says Brittany Bergquist, "Cell Phones for Soldiers" co-founder. "It is easy for Americans to make a small sacrifice of support by donating their unused cell phones, and providing families with a much-needed connection to their loved ones overseas."

Local residents can support the collection drive by donating their phones at The Springs Funeral Services, 3115 E. Platte Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80909, 719-328-1793

"We're proud to show our support for U.S. soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soliders," says Terri Flores-Brown, co-owner of The Springs Funeral Services.

About Cell Phones for Soldiers:

"Cell Phones for Soldiers" was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist of Norwell, Mass. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out.  They started by opening an account with $21.00 of their own money.  Since then, the registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas. They are collecting cash donations and old cell phones.  The cell phones are recycled for cash and the proceeds are used to buy prepaid calling cards for our soldiers serving in the Middle East.

Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  The goal is to provide every US soldier with a way to call home for free.  For more information, please visit http://www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com/

Meeting Summary

February Meeting Summary

GREENING YOUR BUSINESS

There are ways individually and through our companies where each of us can make a difference to the Colorado Springs community.  At the EWI February monthly meeting, we heard Jackie Rockwell, Assistant Director of Catamount Institute and Meike Alberts, an member of the Colorado Springs EWI chapter who owns Perquest Payroll Services, tell us ways we can improve our business practices.

The Pikes Peak Sustainable Business Network is brought to our community by the Catamount Institute.  It is a membership network of professionals and businesses to support community initiatives.   PPSBN provides tools, resources, awareness, and inspiration to business leaders seeking to incorporate sustainable practices in their decision making and strategic planning.   This is done by the triple bottom line of people-planet-profit.  Jackie gave several examples of well-known businesses in Colorado Springs that have made definite decisions to make small changes to their businesses like "making a statement" (Old Town Bike Shop), or "trying to change the planet" (Metech Recycling) or "thinking differently to save money" (Cheyenne Mountain Resort).  She recommended that "green teams" be formed in your business to begin making small changes and you will begin to be a part of the answer to develop an environmentally rich community.   Go to their website at http://ppsbn.org/ and see all the community businesses that are part of this innovative network.

It was great to have one of our own EWI member firms, Perquest and Meike Alberts to share her thoughts for the second part of the program of "Greening Your Business."  Perquest is a member of PPSBN and received the Colorado Gold Environmental Leader Award from PPSBN.  She shared with the EWI members "why she is interested in sustainability?"  She told us that she wants her business to protect the planet for the next generation.  She shared that her company, Perquest, does different things to be innovative and socially responsible.  She continues to fully embrace being a community partner and raising awareness for environmental stewardship.

It was a delightful evening at Patty Jewett Clubhouse, we were all engaged in the information that was communicated and sharing ideas and ways we can help our businesses create solutions, collaborate ideas and education for each of us to become part of the solution for economical, ecological and social change.
