Spot Light On...

The Colours Of Wine

Janeene Young

Wine has been a passion of mine for years. I began studying wine in 2005 after a particularly fine glass of Riesling that followed several not-so-great glasses of other wines I couldn't have possibly enjoyed with my beginner's palate and became a Sommelier in 2007.  Wine is a fascinating, complex, (sometimes intimidating) world of labels, wineries, varieties, years, grapes, aromas, and tastes. I enjoy educating, demystifying and simplifying the world of wine for my friends and customers.

My Mother, Jan and I bought the Corkscrew Custom Wine Shop in February 2007. From the moment I walked into the shop, I knew it was the perfect venue for sharing my knowledge, experience, and passion for wine. I knew the Shop would also be perfect for my Mom, a talented Do-It-Yourself-er with a creative streak. Over the years, Mom and I have scrap-booked, decorated and indulged our creative talents together. Now we combine and create customized gifts and baskets for all occasions (birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, showers, picnics, you-name-it). We can even design and print a customized wine label for your selections--making your gift personal, memorable, and extraordinary.

New this year is "The Colours of Wine". After noticing how difficult it was for some people to select a bottle of wine, I devised a color chart that identifies the main aromas and tastes. Once you identify the tastes and corresponding colors, you can go to our shelves and select any bottle of wine that contains those colors and be confident your money is well invested in a bottle you will enjoy. The Color-Coded System also lets you expand your experience of wine by letting you venture to new labels that have the tastes you enjoy but might also contain one more element you'd like to explore. For example, if you like something light and fruity, you might also want to try a light, fruity wine with peppery undertones. Helping you find new tastes to enjoy is one of my greatest joys.  Keep your eye out for our website that will provide a wine shopping experience like nothing you have ever experienced at www.coloradospringswine.com coming in early May.

This summer, The Corkscrew Custom Wine Shop is hosting a series of Saturday wine tastings and you're all invited! Come sample reds, whites, and roses from overseas, across the country and down the road. We carry unusual, hard-to-find labels, local Colorado growers, and organic wines. We also carry decanters, glasses, bottle stoppers, glass charms, and other accessories.

Come see us at:  1635 W Uintah or RSVP for one of our wine tastings: 719.473.9463

We're famous for our wine selection and gifts. Come see us and you will be too.

Here's to your health! Cheers

President's Message ...

CALL FOR LEADERSHIP

by Susan Davis,
Wells Fargo Wealth Management Group

Many of us are often approached by new members and asked "what is the best way for me to get involved and benefit the most from EWI?" The answer is usually, "attend an event, or participate in one of several of our monthly meeting programs such as the Kissing Camels Golf Tournament on June 6th or our August program with Girl Scouts "Got Money" and our local EWI 25th Anniversary in October." Although these are valuable programs to participate in, one of most popular options for meeting peers, building relationships and networks, gaining confidence and acquiring skills and gratification is to become a volunteer!

Just imagine a world where no one volunteered…think of what our city would be like if nobody bothered and everyone refused to help. We would not have some of the great colleges we have, the arts, music, sports and incredible organizations that form our city and fulfill so many needs for our community…. the list is endless and the need is great. Volunteering has become a part and parcel of society and it is truly unimaginable to think of a world without it.

A volunteer is someone who gives time, energy and talents to others. A volunteer is someone who is willing to learn. A volunteer is someone who has the freedom to choose. Volunteers must have an open mind, be willing to embrace wisdom learned from others and also let the experience of volunteering lead to personal inner growth. Volunteers realize the importance of time and kindness. With the wide range of opportunities, volunteers have the freedom to find an organization that best suits their needs. For many, volunteering is a way of life. Whether taking part consists of a few hours after work, an entire day, or months or years at a time, volunteering fulfills a need to give back. EWI is a great place to get involved and volunteer!

Why Volunteer? When you volunteer you are giving something back to your community by lending a helping hand to people and organizations. What you may not realize is that volunteering also benefits you as an individual. There are many good reasons to get involved in the community, including learning something about yourself.
Some of the benefits of volunteering

You can:

  • Make new friends

  • Explore career and personal interests

  • Earn great recommendations for future employment

  • Develop marketable job skills

  • Build your resume

  • Enrich your education

  • Uncover hidden skills and talents

  • Increase your self-confidence

  • Have fun

  • Make a difference

Over one-third of our EWI members are or have volunteered at some point during their membership. We cannot succeed without our volunteers and this is what Executive Women International is all about. Not only will you contribute to the success and vision of EWI, but you will enhance your skills, building lasting friendships and have a lot of fun! Sign up today to become a part of EWI. You can email Kathy Wallace at kawallace@msn.com or call her at 548-0582 or contact me for more information. We can't wait to see what skills and ideas you will contribute to Springs EWI!

I hope that any challenge in your life right now will open your eyes to see how magical and beautiful your everyday lives should be. When your lives become stress filled and burdens weigh heavy on your mind, take a good look around you and see all the blessings and beauty that surround you and the good fortune to have all these friends (especially EWI friends) of a very special kind.

I give you my wish for a springtime of happiness and good health and hope that you will turn and look carefully around you and appreciate your wealth.

"As Above, So Below" Art Show!

Kathy Wallace of WallaceVISION,LLC will be part of a 3 person art show at Commonwheel Artist Coop in Manitou Springs. Come by for the opening Friday, June 6th from 5 to 8pm. The show will run from June 6th through July 14th, and the other artists in the show are Barbara Blake & Marie Baehr. Hope to see you there!

Our program for August is a collaboration between EWI and the Girl Scouts - called GOT MONEY.

This will be an interactive program to combine our mission of Community and EWI by providing stations with volunteer leaders to teach young women lifelong money habits. Each station will have a topic and the girls and EWI member "partners" will rotate to all of the tables.

Upon completion, the girls will earn a charm, like the badges we used
to earn, for their new knowledge. They have a wonderful booklet that will be our guide for the evening. Sandy Taylor and Marty Lockhart from our Colorado Springs office have worked with Susan Davis and me on this program.

This is a unique opportunity for us to share our vast knowledge and help the Girl Scouts prepare for their financial future. It promises to be a fun and new type of program and we encourage you to step up and serve as leaders at a table. There will be 7 stations and 2 women have already volunteered to man 2 of them. We will need 5 more women for the leadership position at the other 5 tables, so please contact me if you would enjoy teaching our Girl Scouts financial tools for their future.

Please Save the Date: AUGUST 13, 2008 for GOT MONEY with the Girl Scouts and EWI.

Don't forget The Broadmoor is hosting the U.S. Senior Open July 28-August 3, 2008

April Meeting

Wednesday, April 9th, proved to be a fantastic evening of EWI networking , socializing, catching up with old friends and meeting new friends at the Old Town Guest House in Old Colorado City, even though the weather left a lot to be desired. Inside the welcoming atmosphere of the Guesthouse attendees, everyone enjoyed eating of Pepper Parmesan Straws, Roast Beef Cocktail Sandwiches with Peach Chutney, Veggies with blue cheese and hummus, Thai Spring Rolls, a Cheese Torte Platter and Salmon Teriyaki on Wonton Crisps, some chocolates and, of course, wine served by a most handsome gentleman. There was wonderful conversations and lots of visiting where everyone enhanced their knowledge of the businesses in attendance.

We had many guests, some of which included Pineapple Daisy (and their scrumptious chocolate covered strawberries), Kikapo (which brought samples of African house decorative items) and Send Out Cards (which helps busy business people send Thank You ' s, etc. to retain clientele) along with El Paso County Clerk & Recorder, CS Business Journal (Rebecca Tonn one of our scholarship recipients) and Etcetera Designs.

Before departing tours were given of the B&B showing the 8 unique soundproofed rooms with balconies overlooking Pikes Peak and/or Garden of the Gods, 4 of which have private outdoor hot tubs with fireplaces and 3 have steam showers (rumors had it that some wanted to just spend the night rather than going back out into the weather).
