President's Message ...

We've Come A Long Way, Baby!

by Susan Davis,
Wells Fargo Wealth Management Group

I am sure some of you have read this excerpt before. I thought it would be fun to see it again.

This is an excerpt from July 1943 issue of Transportation Magazine. This was written for male supervisors of women in the work force during World War II. I am proud to say all women are in control of their lives today!

Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employees. There's no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage.

Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Properties.

1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need to work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.
2. When you have to use older women try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be cantankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.
3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls - those who are just a little on the heavy side - are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.
4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination - one covering female conditions. This step not only protects against possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or physically unfit for the job.
5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.
6. Give the female employee a definite day long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the management for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.
7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.
8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more efficient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.
9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman - it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.
10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.
11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy.

This article just blows me away. It's amazing we can think for ourselves. Being a part of EWI can make a difference to allow each of us to continue to grow and be strong! It's a pleasure to be associated with so many strong and incredible women of Colorado Springs EWI. Each of you make the world a better place!

Membership

This year during my presidency membership had been something I have wanted to strengthen and grow for the Colorado Springs Chapter. We have a lot to brag about and show to the community. This is the organization of choice for women and men. We can be proud that we are 25 years old! No other organization for women can boast such a long-term commitment. We are young and vibrant and wanting to grow again. We have added more firms as member firms with some really great representatives and also being able to retain member firms by offering a more flexible membership attendance.

We still need all of you to invite guests, talk-up EWI and show us off!! If I can help or Angie Stott, our membership director, please do not hesitate to contact one of us. Below is an article from our corporate membership director that I really like. I hope you will read it again and open your mouths about CS EWI! Susan Davis

MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS PRIVILEGES
by Carolyn Summerlin, Membership Director, EWI of Charlotte

That old commercial was right: Membership does have its privileges, and it is a privilege to be a member of Executive Women International! We are a growing and thriving professional organization focused on improving your business and your life.

We are committed professionals. We are active community members. We are mentors. We are business leaders. We are people committed to developing cutting-edge business. We are dependable networking contacts. We are people who want to help others in our communities get a helping hand through the power of literacy. We are out-of-the-box thinkers, doers, producers, entrepreneurs. We are EWI.

Membership in EWI grows when our members open their mouths! Our last membership survery made this clear: 73% of new member firms and representatives are recruited through word of mouth.

In that vein, let me put some words in your mouth:

  • Did you know you can find a Chapter of EWI in 73 communities throughout North America and Europe?

  • Did you know that our 70 year-old organization boasts over 2,800 member firms and 3,500 representatives. {Did you know that Colorado Springs EWI is a 25 year old organization?}

  • Did you know that EWI Representatives promote the cause of literacy through their donation of time, talents and money to Chapter-driven philanthropic endeavors?

  • Did you know that you can learn to be a more successful and powerful professional through our innovative and industry-leading professional development series?

  • EWI also offers its members the opportunity to create connections that make business happen.

  • Did you know our organization gave away $345,850 in scholarships last year? This is on the Chapter and Corporate level!

So, now you know. Do all of us a favor and pass it on. Thank you for your commitment to the future of EWI!

There will be hor doerves, wine and diamonds galore. Don’t miss the excitement!

"As Above, So Below" Art Show!

Kathy Wallace of WallaceVISION,LLC will be part of a 3 person art show at Commonwheel Artist Coop in Manitou Springs. Come by for the opening Friday, June 6th from 5 to 8pm. Our program for August is a collaboration between EWI and the Girl Scouts - called GOT MONEY.

This will be an interactive program to combine our mission of Community and EWI by providing stations with volunteer leaders to teach young women lifelong money habits. Each station will have a topic and the girls and EWI member "partners" will rotate to all of the tables.

Upon completion, the girls will earn a charm, like the badges we used
to earn, for their new knowledge. They have a wonderful booklet that will be our guide for the evening. Sandy Taylor and Marty Lockhart from our Colorado Springs office have worked with Susan Davis and me on this program.

This is a unique opportunity for us to share our vast knowledge and help the Girl Scouts prepare for their financial future. It promises to be a fun and new type of program and we encourage you to step up and serve as leaders at a table. There will be 7 stations and 2 women have already volunteered to man 2 of them. We will need 5 more women for the leadership position at the other 5 tables, so please contact me if you would enjoy teaching our Girl Scouts financial tools for their future.

Please Save the Date: AUGUST 13, 2008 for GOT MONEY with the Girl Scouts and EWI.

Don't forget The Broadmoor is hosting the U.S. Senior Open July 28-August 3, 2008

May Meeting

EWI members and guests enjoyed a stimulating and entertaining presentation by Career and Communication Coach Laura Benjamin at the May 14 meeting held at Giuseppe’s Old Depot Restaurant. Laura’s presentation focused on key patterns of career success and talent development. She imparted tested strategies to help the audience learn how to make the most of a present position, move towards a more rewarding vocation, or transition into the “next half” of working life.

Critical to long-term personal and vocational success, Laura says, is the ability to distinguish and leverage the top 5% of ones skills, talents, and passions. Laura also touched on overcoming the permission paradox, having the courage to differentiate, reconstructing market boundaries, building a master list of success, quantifying accomplishments, and creating a Success Strategy Line ™. She also shared her innovative thinking tool, the CARLA Concept Model ™.

EWI members and guests, even the wait staff, found Laura to be enlightening, entertaining, and down to earth. Without a doubt, Laura is someone who has put into action the top 5% of her talents and skills to produce maximum momentum!
