Happy New Year!
As we enter 2008, I am excited to become a member of Executive
Women International. I look forward to meeting and working
with all of you.
My name is Rhonda Gerberich and I am the Sales/Marketing
Coordinator and Employer Relations Specialist for Profile
Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Profile EAP is part of
Centura Health and was started in 1982 by Penrose-St. Francis
Health Services to provide mental health and drug/alcohol
counseling for employees and their family members along with
training, management and supervisor consultations, and trauma
debriefings.
Because of the success of the internal EAP program, in 1983
our services were offered to other businesses and organizations
in the Colorado Springs area. We now serve more than 90,000
people in 70 organizations located throughout Colorado and
the United States. Our services have also expanded to provide
legal, financial, identity theft and lifecycle services,
and wellness coaching. In addition we have formed Profile
Center for Organizational Enrichment (PCOE) to provide advanced
training for management and frontline supervisors, leadership
development and coaching.
I was born and raised in Wyoming, but I have lived in Colorado
Springs for 34 years - so I'm practically a native! I spent
the first 20 years in Colorado Springs working in the construction
industry - eventually co-owning an electrical wholesale supply
company. After I sold my share of the company, I decided
that I really wanted to work in a ÒcaringÓ profession, so
I began searching for a place where I could use my skills.
I found a home at Profile EAP and have worked here for the
past 14 years.
Best wishes for a prosperous New Year.

President's Message ...
Welcome To 2008
by Susan Davis,
Wells Fargo Wealth Management
Group |
|
How about a little history lesson about New Year's? The celebration
of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first celebrated
in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000
BC, Babylonians celebrated the beginning of a new year on what
is now March 23, although they themselves had no written calendar.
Late March actually is a logical choice for the beginning of a
new year. It is the time of year that spring begins and new crops
are planted. January lst, on the other hand, has neither astronomical
nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary. The Babylonian
New Year Celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own
particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that our
modern New Year's Eve festivities are pale in comparison.
I'm trying to think differently about resolutions. So this year
I've decided that New Year's Resolutions are fun. You have to admit
there is something enticing about the promise of a better life,
a better lifestyle in the coming year. All you have to do is just
make yourself a promise and act on it. Hope springs eternal, right?!
Even the least dedicated tend to make new resolutions each year
in hopes of "making it stick" this time.
Many of us make New Year Resolutions to change something in our
lives that we know is doing us and/or others harm, like smoking,
eating too much, or drinking too heavily. But often the New Year
comes and goes, and nothing has changed. Instead of feeling like
a failure, or making the same resolution every year, make a lifelong
resolution to self-development, that simply begins this year. Making
a long-term resolution requires a few slow steps, the first of
which is a willingness to commit.
For me it's the luxury of making an easy timeline when talking
about your accomplishment(s). "I haven't had a single piece
of chocolate this year!" This has a nice ring to it doesn't
it? Not realistic for me but it could happen.
What about those who say, "Yes, but I'm tired of making myself
the same old promises and never following through with them." Perhaps
you just need a new set of resolutions to choose from.
As I was preparing and thinking about this month's president message,
I began looking at some self-help books and articles and found
a few different resolutions (not your typical resolutions) that
you might not have thought of (neither had I) and could be easy
to stick to--10 Different Resolutions (author Joe Symmes):
1. Drink
more water--Everyone wants to lose weight, we'll this is a great
way to help your body shed a few pounds, and operate
more efficiently without a crazy fad diet.
2. Write your mother, sister or a good friend--Everyone likes
getting a letter in the mail (I enjoy Christmas cards each year)
and in
today's modern communication era, sometimes a good old fashioned
letter or card is all that is needed to warm the heart. Even
an email or a phone call would count.
3. Look on the bright side--All too often we tend to see the
glass as half empty. Try forcing yourself to look for the good
in life.
Start by noting all the green lights that you drive through,
you might be surprised!
4. Spend more time with your kids or grandkids--This one is mostly
for parents, but any one can make a young person's life a little
brighter by paying attention to them. Kids have such a great
outlook on life and can help you forget your worries and woes.
Maybe even
volunteer at Girl Scouts or the Boys & Girls Club.
5. Walk more-- Another healthy living-type resolution, but it
works, is easy, and can even save you money. Try parking farther
away
and taking the stairs when possible. It doesn't take long to
see results.
6. Daily news--Try to catch at least the news headlines each
day. Staying up on current events. It doesn't take much effort
and will
greatly increase your knowledge of the rest of world in short
order.
7. Give back--Find a favorite charity or any charitable opportunity
and give a little something back to society. No matter what you
give, you will feel better about life and your contributions
to others. One that comes to mind is giving back to EWI. We have
lots
of ways to give your time, your talent or even your treasure.
8. Listen to the elderly--You would be surprised how much you
can learn from someone who is senior to you. All it takes is
a moment
of your time and it will make their day in the process.
9. Save-- Set up a savings allotment. However you choose to do
it, try to put some money aside before you "see" it.
Taking funds right out of your paycheck is a painless way to
save and the sooner your start the more thankful you'll be.
10. Write more--From communicating to others to just keeping
a basic journal, everyone has a need to write. The more you
practice at anything the better you will become. If nothing
else, you'll
have something fun to read next year!

December Meeting
December's holiday luncheon was again, the year's most festive
event held at the exquisite Broadmoor Hotel. Several members brought
guests and all enjoyed a delightful lunch, reflecting the quality
and elegance that the Broadmoor is known for! A short program included
poetry readings from two talented women representing a local nonprofit
organization called "Dragon's Wing" which promotes and
supports women poets within our community. Their readings were
inspirational examples of the talent and creativity that women
within EWI share and support within our community.
A moment of silence was observed in recognition of the passing
of Silver Key's founder, Mikki Kraushaar. Mikki emanated the type
of woman EWI is all about and she will be missed.
The day's event ended with a generous display of door prizes that
included spa treatments and the Broadmoor, tickets to the 2008
Senior Open and many other fabulous gifts from several of our members.
Everyone left with the holiday spirit in tact!
