PASSION FOR INTERIOR DESIGN

Lynn Severson

Interior Design passion is a living belief in changing interior spaces to make a clients' life better. It helps reduce stress, increase effeciency, creates beauty, allows better personal balance and therefore improves peoples' lives.

I was lucky to find my passion in Interior Design as a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin. Majoring in science, I was overloaded in the scientific classes and wanted to take basket weaving (Seriously). So I took a basic interior design class, loved it and my professor, and now am still working and living my passion for great interiors. We studied Textile Design and Chemistry, Space and Floor planning, Weaving (fabrics - not baskets) Art History, Furniture styles and Construction and learned things like proportion, scale and color psychology.

In 1971, I graduated and armed with my B.S. in Interior Design, I came to Colorado Springs and began working at the wonderful Home Furniture downtown. I was hired as an interior designer and was given the responsibility of improving their drapery department. During my six years there, I improved their window covering department and worked with many fine, loyal clients. Some are still actively buying from me after all of these years.

My children were born in 1977 and 1980 and by then I was practicing as Lynn Severson Interiors. The industry has changed over the years and I've restructured the business to fit the times. Clients are able to get help from me for any part of their home, from small changes in structure, to kitchen remodels and advice on other ways to make their spaces more effecient. I offer fabrics from all over the world, the exclusive Alustra line of window shadings from Hunter Douglas, fine furniture - upholstery and wood groups, wall finishes, flooring of all types, cabinets and granite, unique accessories and lamps, and custom made area rugs. When clients purchase from me, it is fee free and they then get my interior design expertise as long as they want it.

My schedule is by appointment and clients are welcome to see what is "on display" at my home office. Because the projects I do are at the clients home or office, I go to their homes to evaluate the project scope and learn about their desires. These are complimentary visits. Often we will go to "to the trade only" showrooms in Denver and other markets in large cities. Because there are many and varied products all over the world, I don't want my clients to be limited by what they can find locally.

So you now have a glimpse of why I am passionate about interior design. It's in my blood and there is always something new to learn and new challenges to meet in the field. Each day brings a new perspective to my work and I truly enjoy helping my clients achieve their dreams for their interior environment. Through my work, I truly live my passion.

Thanks for reading this "Spotlight" column about me and Lynn Severson Interiors. I appreciate it.

President's Message ...

The Power of Partnerships

by Susan Davis,
Wells Fargo Wealth Management Group

I want to make sure that all of you will attend our February 13, 2008 meeting at Patty Jewett Golf Course. We are going to feature the LCAM Biker Babes. This meeting you will not want to miss. LCAM stands for Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting. We are going to explore with you this awesome conference that we have the privilege of attending each year in September and why all of you want to get involved in our local EWI chapter and the international chapter so you can experience a leadership conference put on by women for women. Make sure you put the date down for February 13th.
I would also like to ask each member to also assist our chapter by concentrating on a couple projects we have going on until June 2008~~EWI Membership 2008 and 6th Annual EWI Golf Tournament.

1. The Power of Partnerships, EWI Membership 2008

Goal: To increase EWI's membership and expand The Power of Partnerships throughout the organization.

Objective: to encourage current EWI members to assist in recruitment efforts and to offer incentives to EWI "recruiters" (individual representatives and Chapters) to partner together to increase our chapter base.

Targeted timeframe for recruitment: October 1 - May 31, 2008

Recruiter Incentives: 1) For each new member firm that joins during the recruitment period, the recruiter's name will be entered into a drawing for an LCAM registration, hotel fee and airfare! There are no limits to the number of chances a representative can earn. This is an incredible opportunity to go to LCAM and have it paid for. WOW! LCAM in 2008 is in Palm Springs, CA! another WOW!

2) The representative who recruits the most new member firms that joins during the recruitment period will win the grand prize - a travel voucher valued at $1,500.00. Again this is a huge prize and chance to be a part of the international leadership conference!

Chapter Incentives: 1) Each Chapter that achieves net growth plus one by June 1, 2008 (net growth plus 1 is defined as the Chapter having at least one more member firm as of 6-1-08 than it had on 10-1-07) will receive one free registration to the Academy of Leadership (AOL) to be used at the Chapter's discretion. The Academy of Leadership registration award is valid through September 20, 2008. If we can retain our membership this year and grow it by one more member our chapter could get a free registration to the AOL which is $700 value. That is money in our pocket! We need to keep our membership number at 52 and grow it by one. How easy is that! Let's do it!

Each of you can help us achieve this membership goal and prizes if you will reach out and invite new firms and individuals to our EWI Chapter. Look around, extend invitations to those around you to come to our monthly Chapter meetings or think about having a second or third representative from your firm join. If you have any questions, or need applications please contact our Membership chairwoman, Angie Stott (she is with Benefit Resources) at 884-0700. Or you can contact one of her committee members, Tia Warren (Executive Images by Tia) at 266-0430 or Marti Hartman (Woodford Mfg) at 574-0600. I also recommend you go to the website www.executivewomen.org or www.springsewi.com for more information.

2. 6th Annual EWI Golf Tournament

The golf tournament is Friday June 6, 2008! Not too far away. This golf tournament is on the map as one of the most enjoyable events put on at the first part of the summer. So you have got to be a part of it! Last year our Chapter had approximately 92.2% participation. This year we are striving for 100% participation by our member firms and representatives. The Ways & Means Committee is seeking golf sponsorships on many levels so don't be shy, get involved, get your family and friends to this event. You can contact Carol Bryant (Stanley Steemer) at 570-1068 and Dianne Crimble (Pass It On, Inc.) at 471-8320 for more information or go to our website at www.springs.com.

Ways & Means is seeking the following: $5,000 PhD Level Sponsor, $2,000 Master Level Sponsorships, $1,000 Bachelor Level Sponsorships, $500 Associate Level Sponsorships, $50 Golf Cart Sponsors, Putting Challenge Sponsorship, and $300 Golf Hole Sponsors. We are also looking for donations for door prizes and tee bag items along with volunteers on the day of the event.

Please consider giving to our only fund raising event for the year. These funds help us, as an organization; give back to the community through scholarships to transitional women.

Happy Valentine's Day and thank you for being a member of EWI Colorado Springs!!! We do appreciate you!

January Meeting

The Sunbird Restaurant was a delightful setting for our January meeting. We had the great honor of Jan Martin, councilwoman, speak to us about "The Road to City Council." She shared her story growing up in Colorado Springs and her love for this city. She is a native to Colorado Springs and when she asked if any of the ladies in the audience were natives to Colorado Springs, I was utterly amazed how many of our members grew up here. I love seeing and hearing about the history of this city and to have Jan share her history was wonderful. She told us about Nevada Avenue when it was the main highway for the Springs, she guided us through her family history, told us about her father's Buick dealership, how she decided on her education and career, how she created jobs for herself, the importance of giving back to the community in many different ways and now her vision and work for City Council. She told us as women to have vision, seek leadership and always grow your circle of influence. I loved hearing this because this is what EWI is all about--vision, leadership and the great circle of influence we share with each other.

Jan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Northern Colorado and an MBA in Finance from Regis University. She is the owner of Martin Business Group, Inc. which specializes in information systems and business training for local organizations. She is also a part time instructor in the Online MBA program at the University of Phoenix.

Prior to serving on City Council, Jan served on numerous boards and commissions. She was President of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Board, Vice President of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Foundation, and served on the boards of Citizen Project, Downtown Partnership and Leadership Pikes Peak Board of Trustees. In addition, she was a member of the City’s Charter Review Committee and El Paso County’s Citizen Outreach Group. I hope you enjoyed her as much as I did.
