Christine Ressler

Pikes Peak Regional Development Corporation

Pikes Peak Regional Development Corporation (PPRDC) recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. PPRDC was originally formed under the name of the Old Colorado City Development Company. The organization originated through the cooperative efforts of the City of Colorado Springs and business persons from the Westside of the city. PPRDC was originally formed to provide low interest loans to small businesses located within a six square block area of the Westside. Since that time, PPRDC has been certified by the U.S. Small Business Administration to provide the 504 Loan Program as a Certified Development Company. PPRDC has assisted several hundred small businesses throughout the State of Colorado from the small automatic door company to the multi-million dollar car dealership. The SBA 504 Loan Program is for the purchase and use of long term fixed assets such as land, buildings and capital equipment. Low down payments, high leverage and low fixed rates are all accomplished with the 504 loan program.

PPRDC also administers the El Paso County Revolving Loan Fund Program for the Economic Development Division, Financial Services Department of El Paso County. This loan fund is available to any small business located in an El Paso County designated Enterprise Zone in the City of Colorado Springs. Small businesses located in un-incorporated El Paso County and its smaller incorporated towns are also eligible to receive financing from this program.

Christine Ressler is the Project Manager at Pikes Peak Regional Development Corporation. She came out of the banking world in 1999 when her husband decided to retire in Colorado Springs from 20 years in the Army. Christine and her husband saw this as a great opportunity to provide some stability for their children in them being able to attend all four years at one high school – a luxury many military families don’t often get.

Christine enjoys her role at PPRDC working with small business owners to achieve their financing goals. She regularly encourages small business owners to take advantage of the many resources available locally that support business growth, education and economic development. Christine occasionally speaks to classes at the Small Business Development Center on the importance of good financial management and how to get started on the loan application process when approaching lenders.

Christine joined EWI in February of 2005 and appreciates the support, camaraderie, and mission of our professional women’s group. She was honored to be asked to serve as EWI’s Treasurer on the 2007/2008 Board. Look for Christine at PPRDC’s table at EWI’s Annual Cavalcade of Firms.

Christine can be reached at 719-471-2044 or Christine@pprdc.com.

President's Message ...

Don't Rock The Ship Baby
My First President Message-
hang on it's a long one!

by Susan Davis,
Wells Fargo Wealth Management Group

Going to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is always a treat! The weather wasabsolutely wonderful and having cocktails withmembers and guests outside near the giraffe exhibit was awesome. I mentioned to several members and guests that night that one of the things I like (there are many) about EWI, as a woman's organization, is being able to host our monthly meetings at different locations. I really like being able to experience different venues or places throughout our growing city that I would probably not take the time to go see or do. Other women organizations go to hotel conference rooms and miss out on the experience of our community. I like the way our chapter opens up the Colorado Springs world to us.

The evening then progressed to the safari room with a great meal, lots of networking and introduction of guests along with a few words from Kelly Ferrin, one of our scholarship recipients. Kathy Wallace, outgoing president, then passed her duties and gavel to me. We thank Kathy for her hard work this past year and will continue to look to her for guidance and support.

Before I introduced the 2007-2008 EWI board, I was able to tell the audience about a dream I had. I was on an island. I called it the Island of EWI. I could not figure out where I was. I was looking all around trying to identify where I was at. It was foggy, misty, and it looked like there was dense forest in front of me but it was hard for me know for sure. Then I saw a figure coming toward me and I was a bit apprehensive but noticed that it was a shape of woman. As the woman got closer to me I could tell she was a very wise and sage woman (Kathleen Bosley-Kershaw). She came up to me and said a very profound statement. " It's not the size of the ship, it's the motion in the ocean." So I thought about what she said to me and tried to relate that to what I was experiencing in dream, on this island. As she walked away from me in the fog and mist, she turned to me and said, "look for the ship." Then she disappeared. Look for the ship? What did she mean "look for the ship?" So I began to wander on the Island of EWI and lo and behold I came across a ship. Just like she said. I looked around the ship and found a ladder to climb. When I got to the deck there was a crew of people working diligently. They turned to me and said they were looking for me, waiting for a captain. I was confused as I looked back at them. Then I woke up. That was the end of my dream.

It's not the size of the ship, it's the motion in the ocean." With that statement I decided to make that my mantra (our mantra) for EWI this year. I put on my captain hat. The ship = Colorado Springs Chapter of EWI, the motion = board officers, committee chairwomen, the entire EWI membership, and the ocean = our city of Colorado Springs. I then introduced the "crew of the ship" the 2007-08 EWI board and committee chairwomen with their sailor hats and grass hats.

From there I took a few minutes and laid out a vision I would like to explore on this ship (Colorado Springs EWI) over the next year.

1. Increase, improve our membership by at least 10 additional member firms or more. Retain the firms we have. Raise awareness of EWI throughout the community including the benefits and value EWI has to offer to women.

2. Motiviate member representatives to partake in the educational and leadership opportunities that EWI (corporate & local) has to offer. i.e. LCAM, professional development teleseminars, the certified professional leadership program (Academy online), the modules offered at Academy of Leadership and our monthly programs.

3. Continue to raise funds through our Ways and Means committee, (through the golf tournament) in order that we can continue to send representatives to LCAM in September 2008 and to provide ASIST scholarships along with other community involvement.

4. Have fun, laugh, enjoy, create friendships and build relationships.

All of us can create the "motion in the ocean" by having our member firms continue to support EWI and by inviting more qualified firms to join. I ask each of you to please reach out, and invite women that you know to come to our chapter meetings each month. EWI was one of the first women organization's in Colorado Springs 24 years ago. We are a well kept secret and each of us needs to promote our benefits and values to other women and companies throughout big city. Thank you and I am honored to be the "Captain of the Ship" this year.

Ways & Means

Hello Ladies of Colorado Springs EWI,

What a fun time we all had at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo! It was great to hear from our Scholarship recipient - Kelly Ferrin, at our meeting. We have been having such a great year and the Ways and Means Committee has done a wonderful job helping to build our scholarship fund up so we are now going to be able to support 4 Women!!! Kelly talked to us on how EWI helped her achieve her dream job. It is a wonderful feeling to be able to help someone get the education they need to be able to start their career.

EWI has done a great job in their support but please remember we are starting a new year for the Scholarship Fund and we still need the continued support of everyone helping with the 6th Annual Golf Tournament. Please think about what you would like to give-- golf level sponsor, volunteer time, tee bag gifts, etc. We will be sending our commitment letters soon and would like to have 100% particapation from everyone in our organization. It's not too early to start thinking about forming your golf team.

Have a great month and we will see you all at the Cavalcade of Firms if you have any questions, comments (or money) for us.

Your Ways & Means Committee
Dianne and Carol

September Meeting

Upon arrival at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, the gangly giraffes happily greeted us as we sipped cocktails and admired their long legs! As we walked to the fully enclosed gazebo where our dinner was to be served, I couldn't help but admire how beautiful the view was from such a stately location on the mountain.

The atmosphere of the meeting space spoke volumes of how far the zoo has come with their constant expansion into serving the community. With a band of curious Merkats peering through the gazebo windows, the attendees at the September meeting enjoyed a tasty display of foods expertly prepared by Wildthings Catering!

Kathy Wallace passed the gavel to the newly appointed President, Susan Davis, which became quite an adventure as the 2007 Board departed their positions and the new board members were introduced. We were transported to the deck of a sailing ship where Susan took the helm and proclaimed her theme for the year, "It's not the size of the ship, it's the motion in the ocean!".

The evening ended with a roar of laughter and applause that even the near by lions would admire. Only time will tell what adventures this new board will provide the brave EWI's of Colorado Springs!
