President's Message ...

LCAM & Cavalcade of Firms

by Susan Davis,
Wells Fargo Wealth Management Group

In the past month a lot has happened.  At the end of September the Colorado Springs EWI Chapter had 11 member representatives attend the Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM) in Houston.  It was an awesome conference and as usual we made an impression on the international organization with our participation and passion for EWI. This is the first time our chapter has had the honor of sending such a strong assembly from Colorado Springs.  We were able to financially send more reps this year because we had a very successful fund raising event (golf tournament) which gave us the financial means to offer the leadership conference to our member firms/reps.  These individuals had to write a short essay as to why they would like to go to LCAM and how they would benefit from attending.  The attendees were:  Kathy Wallace (past president), Pat Cooper, Donna Berty, Lorrie Todd, Audrey Shrive, Carol Bryant, Dianne Crimble, Kelly Wood (past president), Joan Saucerman, Susan Davis and Linda Williamson (past president).  I've asked a couple of ladies who attended to write about LCAM and share their experience with all of you in this newsletter.  So read on.

Next September 2008 LCAM will be held in Palm Springs, California.  LCAM is open to all reps and firms to attend.  Part of EWI is to offer leadership opportunities, knowledge and experience to our member firms and representatives and that is why our strong fund raising is so vital.  Raising funds for leadership conferences, educational programs, and improved monthly programs is a benefit we want all member firms to be able to participate in and draw value from but we can't do it without the support of our members.  We will continue to seek support from everyone through our ways and means committee throughout the year and to also ask all members to invite prospective companies to join our unique, long-standing women's organization in Colorado Springs.

Earlier in October we had our annual Cavalcade of Firms.  It was at the Franciscan Retreat Center on Woodman Road.  The evening was perfection, with a great Indian summer night, a beautiful drive to the foothills, historical landmark and a room full of EWI member firms showcasing themselves and their companies.  It's a great venue to really see the companies in our chapter on a level we normally don't get to experience at the monthly meetings.  I encourage all our member firms to take the time to participate in the mini-expo each year and take this opportunity to showcase your "stuff."  It was outstanding this year and we thank all the reps who participated along with the members and guests who attended!

Silver Key Giving Tree

The Giving Tree provides an opportunity to give a gift to an older adult in our community for the holiday season.  Sometimes this is the only gift they receive.

How it works:

  • Ornaments are made by the Girl Scouts (a member firm) with a gift personally requested.

  • I will have a basket containing those at the November meeting.

  • Choose an ornament.

  • Purchase the gift listed on the back, and bring the gift to the December meeting in a gift bag with the ornament attached so they can deliver it to the proper person.

  • Donation envelopes are also available as a giving option for non-shoppers.  A $30 donation pays for a food basket.

Thank you in advance for your participation and to those who picked up ornaments at the October meeting.  Silver Key is a charter member of EWI.  If she is able, Mikki Kraushaar, founder of Silver Key and Life Member will be our guest at the December luncheon meeting.

LCAM Experience

I was so grateful to have been able to attend this years LCAM and annual meeting in Houston. I was able to connect with many women that I have met over the last twelve plus years that I have been a member of EWI; women from chapters all over the world. Some of these ladies were president of their chapter the same time I was president of ours, others were on the International Board or were the International President.

Although I have been to several annual meetings in the past and having been a past president of EWI, I was still able to gain valuable information personally, as well as for our board and committees.

If any of you have an interest in seeing the bigger picture of EWI or have a business that is not dependant on location I would highly recommend going to the next LCAM in Palm Springs, CA. You can make connections the world over. You can develop personally and professionally, as well as, experience world class speaker, authors and entertainers.

I think the best part of LCAM was to get to know the wonderful women of our Colorado Springs Chapter and see the impression we made by being a vital part of this years annual meeting.

Hello Ladies of Colorado Springs EWI,

The sponsorship letters will go out to the EWI membership in October and every EWI member will receive a phone call from the Ways and Means Committee to determine how each member wants to participate-whether as a sponsor, putting together a foursome, or contributing with a door prize or something for the goodie bag.

Ways & Means

Greetings Colorado Springs Chapter!

Allow me re-introduce myself. I am Tina Rutherford, a member of the Denver Chapter of Executive Women International ("EWI"). The Firm I represent is Land Title Guarantee Company, where I am Executive Assistant to the President/Owner, John E. Freyer. In 2002, I was President of the Denver Chapter and have since served as corporate membership advisor for the Albuquerque, Chicago, Columbus, Colorado Springs (yes, your chapter!), Portland, Salt Lake City and Tampa Bay chapters.

On a personal note, I am married to Eric and we recently celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary. We have two grown children, J.C. and Lisa, who live in Denver. We also have three grandchildren, Selena - 11, Antonio - 8, and Juliana - 5.

Back to EWI! I was asked to once again serve as your corporate membership advisor for 2007-08 and I have the honor of also working with the Salt Lake City Chapter this year. Serving as a Corporate Membership Advisor has been a tremendous opportunity for me and I have enjoyed getting to know members of other Chapters and seeing EWI at work in other cities.

Some of you may wonder, what are the responsibilities of a Corporate Membership Advisor? Simply stated, the Corporate Membership Advisor serves as a liaison from the Corporate Board to the Chapters and is available to advise the Chapters as they need or seek assistance. We "report" to Carolyn Summerlin, Corporate Membership Priority Program Director, and Louise Anderson, Corporate Membership Director, which means the focus of this position is on developing and serving our membership.

So, I have a simple goal - to "be there" for you, the Corporate Board, and our Staff. I want to help your Chapter, the Corporate Staff, and the Corporate Board achieve their goals in the coming months.

I believe our EWI mission statement gives us the direction we need to set goals and work to achieve them. Here are some thoughts - things IÕm sure youÕve heard before - but they bear repeating. EWI is about:

Promoting Member Firms: Since it is the Firm that is the member (and what makes EWI unique among organizations), and the Firms pay the bills and permit their employees to invest the necessary time to participate, it is important that the needs of the Firm are the first priority. Firm recognition may not be the primary reason for each firm joining EWI - our organization means different things to different firms - therefore, it is important to determine what our firms perceive as the greatest benefits to their membership in EWI (e.g., recognition in the community, networking, business contacts, professional growth of employees, etc.), and work to meet those needs.

Enhancing Personal and Professional Development: Providing representatives with critical skills that they can take back to their firms (e.g., communication, marketing, leadership, strategic planning, etc.), provides value to our member Firms, as well as value to the individual representative. If the representative demonstrates that she is gaining something tangible from her membership, the Firm is more likely to be a long-term member.

Encouraging Community Involvement: Something I heard at PresidentsÕ Caucus gave me a new understanding of this aspect of our mission statement. We involve ourselves in our communities through our EWI programs - EWISP, ASIST, and the Reading Rally. Each Chapter can reach out to their communities and touch lives that span generational boundaries. As a non-profit organization, we have limited resources. EWI could be greatly strengthened in membership numbers, dollars, recognition, and effectiveness if chapters would focus their attention on these EWI programs first and foremost.

One thing that continues to become clearer to me each year is that we are a truly unique organization. Every chapter is somewhat different and what our members want can differ from member-to-member and chapter-to-chapter. However, we are one organization focused on bringing our diverse members together with a unified purpose. We have a dedicated team of leaders at every level, a state-of-the-art website that continues to put new resources at our fingertips and keep us informed, and we have each of you. Together, we can make great things happen.

In the coming months, I encourage you and your Chapter - and most importantly, your Chapter leaders - to focus on the EWI mission statement, evaluate your activities based on it and encourage each and every member to participate. Get to know your member firms, as well at their representatives. Ask yourselves: "Is what we are doing supporting EWI and reflecting its mission? If not, why are we doing it?" We should be able to relate each one of our activities to one of the three dimensions of our mission statement. In doing so, we will strengthen our individual chapters and our organization as a whole.

I look forward to working with you in the coming year (and meeting some of you), and I hope that each one of you have a wonderful and valuable year in EWI.

October Meeting

The October EWI meeting was held at the Franciscan Retreat Center at Mount Saint Francis. With a unique and beautiful setting enveloping those that attended, we were treated to a delicious array of delectable treats presented by the full-time chef at the Retreat Center. There was so much food left over that we were able to take home several "human bags" of amazing treats to enjoy again!

The member companies that participated in showcasing their businesses were rewarded with an enthusiastic audience of members and guests. It was a great opportunity to learn more about how unique our businesses are and how we can help benefit from doing business with each other.

Additional thanks go to Kelly Wood with Stading and Wood Chiropractic who provided the libations through The Corkscrew Wine Shop and all of those who donated door prizes.
