Spot Light On...
Audrey Shrive
Aflac Insurance
|

|
I was born and raised in Southwestern South Dakota on a farm
and ranch near Hot Springs. I attended Chadron State College
in Chadron, NE and then transferred to the University of South
Dakota, graduating with degrees in Mass Communications and English.
My degrees were put to work as a non-profit professional. I
spent almost seven years with Junior Achievement; first in Sioux
City, IA before being promoted to a position at the National
Headquarters here in Colorado Springs. My husband's job with
the Army took us to Ft. Bragg for three years where I started
my own training business.
I came back to Colorado Springs in 1997 and was employed as
a professional with the Boy Scouts of America and then at Fellowship
Bible Church. I took the leap out of the non-profit realm six
years ago and joined my husband with his Aflac Insurance business.
Aflac is an international company that generates 75% of its
business in Japan. The remainder is here in the United States.
Over 40 million people have our insurance. Aflac is 158 on the
Fortune 500 list and is consistently ranked in the top companies
to work for, for women and minorities by various publications.
In today's world of benefit challenges for employers, Aflac
is equipped to help business owners meet the challenge with
voluntary benefits that their employees own. These benefits
are designed to help with family expenses during a family health
crisis.
We got to learn first hand just how valuable these benefits
are four years ago as my husband battled cancer. Being retired
military, we were not worried about paying the doctors, but more
concerned with our mortgage and other monthly expenses. The Aflac
Cancer policy was more than adequate to cover those bills and
give us peace of mind, so that my husband could focus on getting
well. I'm happy to report that he his healthy and as ornery as
always!
In my six years with Aflac, I am blessed to have won several
awards with the company. I was nominated three times for the
coveted Amos Award, winning it two out of three times. I qualified
for Aflac's President's Club three years running, which earned
me a trip to Maui, Tokyo and Aruba, respectively. I am also the only agent
in the state of Colorado to be the number one producer three
years in a row with over one half million in production each
year.
I became a member of EWI in September of 2006. While still
the new girl, I have begun to get involved by helping with program
planning and will take over the publicity position with the new
board. I'm having a blast and am grateful to Angie Henry for
inviting me!!

President's Message ...
Life Membership Proposal
by Kathy Wallace,
WallaceVISION, LLC |
 |
Hello, all:
You may remember at a chapter meeting earlier this year, we asked
for your input on the issue of life members. Our chapter has a
large number of them, as we are an older, established chapter,
which is normal. But we have been recently getting numerous requests
for life membership which don’t fit the “not otherwise
eligible” criteria. If you are employed full time by a firm,
you should be a full dues-paying member. If you are retired, you
may be eligible for life membership, if all other criteria are
met. We have established a precedent that Past Presidents are allowed
life membership if they request it. But as some who request it
are still employed full time, this has had an impact on our chapter
finances – and may not be seen as fair by all.
Your membership committee and Board have been studying the Life
membership issue closely, and have drafted a proposal. We would
like any input that you have before finalizing it with a vote.
Recommendation: Any past president is eligible for life membership.
Two Levels of Life Membership for Past Presidents:
1-Past President “not otherwise eligible” for membership
No Dues Assessment
2-Past President Employed Full-Time
Chapter Dues only, no Corporate Dues assessment
Life Membership “Meritorious Service” category:
The applicant is not a Past President, and Is a member who is “not otherwise
eligible for membership” (“Not
otherwise eligible” will be enforced going forward) and
has been a representative in good standing for at least 10 years and
Served as an officer or a committee chair for at least 5 years
“
Grandmother in” /no dues assessment for those already granted Life Membership.
If
you have any further thoughts on this issue, please let me, Donna Berty,
Carol Bryant or Marti Hartmann know right away. THANKS.

Tia Warren of Executive Image would like to offer a 10%
member to member discount to all EWI’s. If you don’t
know what colors make you look fabulous, what clothes trim
your figure or if you have a closet in need of “surgery”,
this service is for you! Call 719.331.3702 Tia for information
or visit her web site at www.imagebytia.com.
“Last year I met with Tia to have her help me 'update'
my look. I wasn't really sure of what the process would be
like, but I can tell you I thoroughly enjoyed it! Tia pointed
out to me my 'best' colors for clothing and jewelry tones.
I cannot tell you how it changed the way I shop now! I look
for those colors and tones FIRST before I look at style.
The results have been amazing and the compliments I get are
never-ending. The experience that Tia brings is incredible
and I am sure she could help you to achieve your up to date
and most attractive image as well! Thank you Tia!”

Past President Update

SHARON BERTHRONG PAST PRESIDENT 1997
Did you know that Sharon played the saxophone in her high
school years? Sharon now plays in the New Horizon's
band which plays for the band member's enjoyment and the
group occasionally holds concerts. On the day that
I called Sharon, she was taking care of her grandson from
Denver, Benjamin, now age 41/2;. Sharon recently
traveled to New Orleans where her daughter, a Cleveland cardiologist,
presented a paper at a medical conference and won second
place. In a few weeks, she will be leaving for Mexico
for a "work and learn" cultural experience. Sharon
is into going to the gym and walking -- as when she is ready
to go, she wants to go, none of that waiting around for other
people stuff. Sharon was involved with Jan Martin's
recent City Council election as well as working on the Karen
Possehl Women's Endowment through the University of Colorado
at Colorado Springs.

CMRF
August 25, 2007
Eleven years ago several EWI members sat around my dinner
table and came up with a plan that would become an integral
part of the success of an important public/private
partnership called The Colorado Mountain Reclamation Foundation. That
plan resulted in ten annual fundraising hikes to help fund
the reclamation of quarry scars on our mountain backdrop. To
further explain I must take you back in history.
Sixty-five million years ago a movement called the Ute
Pass Fault pushed a layer of limestone to the surface. Limestone
outcroppings appeared in the Pikes Peak region with the
largest outcroppings found where the Pikeview, Oueens Canyon
and Snyder Quarries are now located. This unique
occurrence provided a convenient, inexpensive source of
building material for people who began to settle in the
area in the 1850s.
The City of Colorado Springs was founded in 1871. Significant
quarry operations began around 1874 by the Snyder brothers
north of Manitou Springs. Some say that Snyder may be the
oldest quarry in the state.
In 1906, the first mining claim was staked on land at
Pikeview Quarry. The Pikeview Coal Mine used limestone
from the quarry in its operations. The coal mine
was located in what is now Rockrimmon.
In 1955 Castle Concrete Company began operations at Queens
Quarry located above Garden of the Gods.
Since 1954, the material from the quarries has been used
to build the Air ForceAcademy, the new Colorado Springs
Airport, the Norwest building, NORAD, thousands of single-family
homes and apartments in Colorado Springs. It has
been estimated that 70% of our city's infrastructure was
built with material from the quarries. Not the least
of these is the massive current construction of the
As the city grew the quarries grew and public opposition
grew. Opponents objected to the adverse aesthetic
and visual impact on our most important community asset
i.e. the mountain backdrop. Public controversy became
extreme and was often referred to as "The Scar Wars" during
the 70s and 80s.Numerous attempts to include visual impact
criteria in state reclamation laws were unsuccessful.
However, momentum grew to find a solution at a local level
and a remarkable community effort was initiated to develop
visual objectives for the reclamation of the quarries to
recapture the scenic quality of the disturbed land. The
efforts involved city, county and state government, the
Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, private citizens
and Castle Concrete Company, the owner of the quarries.
The result of these efforts was the formation of The Colorado
Mountain Reclamation Foundation whose purpose is to "enhance
reclamation of the three front range quarry sites in El
Paso County, improving the visual impact of the mountain
backdrop, using public and private resources in partnership
with the quarry owners."
Since 1995 Colorado Mountain Reclamation Foundation's
(CMRF) community volunteers have planted 7,000 Pinon Pine
and Rocky Mountain Juniper on Greg Francis Wildlife Habitat
(Queens Quarry) and 1,500 Pinyon Pine and Rocky Mountain
Juniper on Snyder Quarry.
This brief history is not only for new EWI members but
for those many EWI friends that have volunteered so much
time to the fundraising hikes, and for you all to know
how you have helped this community become a better place
to live.
Jeannie Roblewsky organized and led the registration team
every year for ten years! Sally and her people at
Accent Photo have been so good to CMRF with the advertising
etc. Kathy Kelly has put in hours and hours organizing,
recruiting, collecting goodies and being our master of
ceremonies.. Bea and Sinton Dairy with the juices; Cathie
and Kathy at Lane Sales. I could go on and on and list
at least 20 other members i.e. the Broadmoor, Linda; Wallace
Vision, Kathy; Catchet Basket, Beth; Joan and Joan, etc,
etc.
On a side note: the 2005 hike on Queens was a real example
of what EWI women can do. I had broken my arm a few
days before the hike and I was having a severe reaction
to pain pills. I could not be at the hike.. My board
of directors was in a panic! They decided to be at
the hike (they rarely are) for fear something would go
wrong! With more than 750 hikers and
EWI in charge of course nothing went wrong! Everything
worked like a well oiled machine!
Having completed reclamation at the Queens Quarry, CMRF
is now ready to show the public the reclamation work done
at the Pikeview Quarry. On Saturday, August 25th,
hikers can view the 5,000 trees and shrubs at the 2.5 mile
1st Annual Quarry Quest Hike. For the first time
the public will be permitted to hike the 2.5 mile loop
road of moderate ascent to see spectacular scenery and
healthy re-vegetation.. As the hike ends there will
be breakfast, country western music and prizes.
I encourage new members to sign up at the July meeting
to become involved in this important community improvement
project by helping at the 1st Annual Quarry
Quest Hike on Saturday, August 25th. Planning
meetings will include dinner at my place.

Ways & Means Committee
Report
At the writing of this news, it is too early to announce the
final profit numbers on the 5th Annual Scholastic Classic
Golf Tournament. However, we are very proud to say, the day
was a resounding success in the areas of golf, fun, food,
ambiance, and weather. In addition to 58 fantastic door prizes,
the TEE bags overflowing with goodies, the Putting Challenge
awards, and the closest to the hole/longest drive awards,
plus the first place awards for Men, Women and Mixed groups
made the day exciting and rewarding for all. Special thanks
go to Caroline Easton and Doug Wilson of Kissing Camels Golf
Club, who served to make this a very professional event.
Two celebrities joined us for the tournament. Troy
Calhoun, new football coach for the Air Force Academy, played
golf with
the ReMax Team, and Marti Hartman's son Mike, newly returned
from Iraq, received a well-deserved and emotional standing
ovation.
The Co-Chairmen of the Ways and Means Committee
wish to thank the committee members who worked so hard to make
this
a successful
event: Christine Ressler, Marti Hartman, Kathy Kelly, Judy
Wilhelm, Kathryn Flobeck, Jean Roblewsky, Lynn Severson, Caroline
Easton, and Debbie Tuzel. Also key to our success were our
Advisors: Kay Atwood, Bea Steahlin, Pat Cooper, Joan Saucerman,
and Verna Severson.
We need to include Beth Alexander, (Cachet
Baskets) Publicity for her efforts with Amanda Mountain (Gazette)
for the newspaper
ads, as well as our Technical Advisor, Lorrie Todd (Page Café.Com)
for helping with the online registrations. Debbie Tuzel (Art
of Design) developed our stationary and Sally Seidlitz (Accent
Photo) printed all of our collaterals for the event. Marti
Hartman (Woodford) donated postage for all mailings, and Rita
Worster (BKD) sponsored the Putting Challenge.
Another group
who deserve accolades is our very generous sponsors:
PhD Level- Pepsi, Lane Affiliated Companies
PhD Media Level: The Gazette
Master Level- Wells
Fargo Bank, Select Hospital, Law Offices of Dianna Harris
Bachelor Level- ENT Federal Credit Union, Wells Fargo Insurance
Co (fka Acordia)
Associate Level- Mountain States Pipe and Supply
The
18 Hole Sponsors, Cart Sponsors, Door Prize Donors, TEE Bag
favor donors and all the Volunteers needed the day of tournament
are all on our "thank you" list as well as all 88
golfers. We wish we could list everyone's name and hope you
know who you are! Please know we are so grateful for everyone
assisting us in reaching our goal and fulfilling our mission
to provide scholarships funds.
OK, so now we have a month before
we go again! Got GOLF?
