Spot Light On...
Extending Goodwill
to the Western
Slope
by
Lorrie Molli
|

|
It's an exciting time for Goodwill! Not only are plans underway
to begin construction on a new retail center at S. Circle and
Janitell near Khol's by year-end, Goodwill is making its presence
know in other parts of our territory. In September, we broke
ground on our largest facility to date Ð a 30,590 sq.ft. combined
retail and rehabilitation center in Grand Junction. The center
will also house a community room, retail production area, and
a warehouse. Grand opening is planned for May.
Something you might not know, Goodwill Industries of Colorado
Springs' territory extends westerly to the Utah border encompassing
the city of Grand Junction in Mesa County. This area remains
largely underserved in the arenas of nonprofit thrift and vocational
rehabilitation. We have been actively exploring ways to address
the needs of Grand Junction for over 10 years as a way to benefit
the people on the western slope. As Goodwill looks toward the
future, serving this part of our territory becomes increasingly
more important and exhilarating. As with all of Goodwill's retail
centers, the Grand Junction center will be a training ground
employing people with disabilities and disadvantages as well
as offer the community low-cost merchandise and a venue for recycling.
Located in the fastest growing hotbed of commercial activity,
this retail center has the key ingredients to continue Goodwill's
master plan of expanding our retail presence in communities of
high growth and positive demographics. It will contribute revenue
critically needed for investing in the people Goodwill serves
and building Goodwill's future.
The center will feature a spacious, attractively designed retail
store complete with fashions for the whole family, house wares,
collectibles, sporting goods, toys and an outdoor sales area.
It will also house a book nook and have a complimentary coffee
bar serving Goodwill's unique blend of coffee and Internet hookups
to www.shopgoodwill.com. To make donating easy, the center will
include a two-lane donation drive-thru with treats for donors
such as bottled water, soda and coffee. For the youngsters in
the vehicle, Goodwill will offer tootsie pops and doggie bones
for the family pet.
Exclusive to this location will be on-site training and rehabilitation
programs for high school students to enhance their vocational
skills.
Also unique to the design is a 1,400 sq.ft. community room with
video conferencing abilities that will help connect Grand Junction
employees and Board Members to Colorado Springs. The community
room will also be open to local nonprofit organizations, enabling
them to utilize its event space for everything from Girl Scout
bake sales to Rotary meetings. Currently, Goodwill has eight
stores which fund our programs and services. Everyone benefits
when citizens with disabilities and disadvantages realize their
full potential, achieve independence and become taxpayers and
consumers in our economy. Completion of this project will not
only strengthen Goodwill, it will help strengthen our communities.
It's an exhilarating time for us, and we're honored to take
on the opportunity. Stay tuned there's more to come!

President's Message ...
Premier Membership!
by Kathy Wallace,
WallaceVISION, LLC |
 |
EWI is the premier executive-level, non-compete women's organization
in the Pikes Peak region. That statement could be our
tag-line, our sales pitch to prospective members. The key
words are "Premier", "Executive-level", "Non-compete" and "Women's"! That's
why we are here - for that kind of networking!
Who do you know? We
are looking to fill the following categories in our membership
with executive women:
- Architect
- Broadcasting media
- Telecommunications
- Gym/personal trainer
- Salon/Day Spa
- Funeral Home
- Pharmaceutical
- Commercial Real Estate
- Retail clothing
|
- Country Club/Resort
- Auto Dealership
- Home Inspector
- Print shop/camera shop
- Florist
- Liqueur store
- Auto repair
- Travel agency
|
If you know of the right person in one of these categories or
another category that you know will not compete with an existing
member, invite them to come as a guest to a meeting! It's
up to all of us to find the right members for EWI!
Not Your Mother's EWI! I
have heard the concern that our membership is "way down" and "it's
not the same anymore."
One: All organizations
change and evolve! Our business environment is quite different
from when we started locally over 20 years ago! There are
more options and choices for executive women now. But we
can and are retaining our premier status. You help us do
it: you are ALL EWI.
Two: Our chapter
has about 20 Life Members, a privilege granted for exceptional
service to the organization on the board,
as a past president, etc. This is VERY unusual in the world
of EWI, and we are complimented that so many of our past presidents
have wanted to stay affiliated with EWI this way. But if
you add in our strong contingent of Life members, we actually
have a very large chapter.
So let's see who we know! I hope to see you and your
guests at our April meeting!

Congratulations to KATHLEEN O'LEARY on her promotion to Vice
President for Lane Affiliated Companies. Kathleen has been
with Lane for more than 22 years and was the 2005-2006 President
of our Chapter. This is a wonderful, well-deserved promotion
for Kathleen? YOU GO GIRL!! |
 |
Kathleen Bosley-Kershaw just sold another home for me and
my family and the home was only on the market 15 days!! This
is the second home she has sold for us inside a year demonstrating
that she is a true professional. I can't wait to use her again
when I purchase a home this summer. Thanks, Kathleen, for your
friendship and hard work.

Congratulations to Sally Seidlitz, Accent Photo Imaging,
for her nominated for the Girl Scouts Wagon Wheel Council
- Women of Distinction Award.
The Women of Distinction award is designed to recognize
and honor women in the Pikes Peak region who have made
an outstanding commitment and contribution to their community,
profession or chosen field and who embody the values of
Girl Scouting: Courage, Confidence and Character.
|
Because Girl Scouts & EWI share the goal of connecting women
and recognizing the achievements of women, it should come as
no surprise that several of the finalists at this year's Women
of
Distinction event are current EWI members!
Girl Scouts - Wagon Wheel Council would like to congratulate the
2007 Women of Distinction Award recipients: Laura Muir for the
Business Sector, Paulette Greenberg for the Community Sector, and
Alicia McConnell for the Service Sector. This year, there were
many incredible finalists as well, all of whom
demonstrate Girl Scout courage, confidence and character: : Iva
Bowers,
Dr. Jeanne Derber, Susan Edmondson, Gayle Gross, Jacqueline Lundquist,
Linda Meredith, Sally Seidlitz,, Carol Sturman and Phyllis Wells.

Got Golf?
Calling all EWI’s…… |
|
Two months to go to June
1st and the 5th Annual Scholastic Classis Golf Tournament!!!
-
We
did it!!! We met the Pepsi Challenge of raising $5,000 in golf
hole sponsorships and Pepsi will match EWI dollar for dollar.
We worked hard at finding those companies and the majority of the
companies were EWI members. Way to go ladies!
-
For the first time ever we have filled every sponsorship
level, from PH.d, to Master, Bachelor, Associate levels, also
the Putting Challenge, and we are selling one golf cart at a
time.
This is awesome!
-
We are so close to reaching our gross goal of $31,000.
We are approximately $2,500 short and we are still looking for
anyone who will make a donation of any size. Please help us find
those dollars.
-
We have limited the number of golfers this year to
the first 72 golfers registered.
We only have 13 slots left. So form your 4-some right now, get
your registration form and $$ into us quick. You pay, you play.
-
You can go to the EWI website and print the registration
form www.springsewi.com/golf/
-
Door prizes: We are also looking for awesome door prizes.
Please talk to all your friends, relatives, anyone you come in
contact with and see if they will donate a spectacular door prize
for these golfers. It will be fun to have a great day of golf
and then leave with a nifty door prize too.
-
Tee favors for bags: we also need company promotional
items for the tee favor bags. We can use all sorts of fun items.
This is a great way to promote your company for longer than a
day.
-
If you are interested in attending the luncheon on
June 1st at the Kissing Camels Golf Club, you will need to RSVP
in April.
Space will be limited. Lunch will cost $30.00.
-
Don’t hesitate to contact Susan Davis at 577-5332
or Donna Berty at 667-0898, or anyone on the golf tournament
committee if you have any questions, thoughts or ideas.
-
Huge thanks to the great Ways & Means Committee.
They have worked hard since last August. Hope lots of EWI members
will think about helping out next year. It’s not to early,
its fun, its rewarding and it is for a terrific cause…..funding
scholarships for the promotion and development of women through
education.

March Meeting

|
At the March meeting, we were inspired to "power up, stand
up and SpeakStrong!" Those words of wisdom came from Certified
Speaking Professional and author Meryl Runion. We dined on delicious
baked salmon, seafood purses and samosas at the lovely Warehouse
Restaurant while learning the fine art of HOW to say what needs
to be said in a way that will get the results we want! A special
surprise appearance by Donna Vessey...er..I mean "Bunny Bubbles" in
her acting debut was the pièce de résistance and
had us all rolling in the isles (or it could have been the wine.)
