Colorado Springs Chapter

August 2011

Spot Light On...

worster-ritaBKD, LLP is proud to be one of the charter members of EWI Colorado Springs. BKD, LLP is the 10th largest CPA and advisory firm in the U.S. We have approximately 2,000 professionals serving clients in all 50 states and internationally. BKD and its subsidiaries offer clients a variety of services in accounting, audit and assurance, tax, risk management, technology, corporate finance, forensic and valuation services and wealth management. We serve a wide range of industries, including financial services, not-for-profit, manufacturing, distribution, health care, construction, and real estate.

I provide tax services to clients, both individuals and businesses. The majority of my time is devoted to working with nonprofit organizations, including those in the health care industry, on their tax needs. The IRS has made sweeping changes to the reporting required by nonprofits in the last three years and I have been very busy keeping up with those changes along with the usual payroll, sales and property tax issues that arise.

Our family relocated to Colorado Springs in 2005 from Lincoln, Nebraska. I was born and raised in Nebraska and met my husband while attending Nebraska Wesleyan University. Alan and I have been married for 26 years. In 2003 we expanded our family with the addition of our son, Eric. We adopted Eric from Korea when he was six months old and he keeps us on our toes.

Spending time with family is my main activity outside of work but I also love music, reading, puzzles of all kinds, and of course getting to know my fellow ewis!

President's Message

 byrant-carol2010.jpg

President Carol Bryant

2011July_pres_msgIt was a wonderful networking meeting we had last month at Joan Pierce’s home, thank you Joan (and Warren) for your hospitality.  It is great to visit with each other and have a relaxing time getting to know more about each of us and our businesses.  We try to pack so many things into our lives and sometimes it is good to stop and smell the flowers.

August is a very busy month for a lot of us.  We are ending our summer, the kids are going back to school and we are trying to get in our last vacation trips.  In EWI we are getting ready to go to L-Cam (Leadership Conference & Annual Meeting).

Ladies I feel compelled to give this push for the L-Cam event.  When you go you will get an educational experience that is phenomenal and you will see the grand scale of what goes on with International.  It is an opportunity to network and make contacts with other businesses across the country.  Take advantage of this training you get from EWI members to national speakers. You will come back from L-cam to EWI and your business with so much enthusiasm and knowledge you will start applying what you’ve learned immediately.  Whether you are sent by EWI or your own company it will be a huge benefit!  This month we want to remember to be prepared to have a wonderful fall season and we can do that with the tools that are available to us from EWI.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:

2011July_summerThursday the 21st of July we were invited by the Denver EWI chapter to join them in Sedalia at a wonderful old restaurant call Gabriel's.  The evening was filled with making new friends and we were honored to have the Corp President of EWI join us for the night.  She was very informative of what will be happening at LCAM this year and things to look forward to.  The speaker was a member of the Denver chapter and she spoke about the Empowering Women.  It is an event that we are going to try and do every year in the summer with them.

We are looking forward to the rest of the years programs.  August will be with one of our own members Heather Darrigan of Motif.  This is going to be a wine tasting and all should have a great time.

Looking forward to seeing all of the members there.

SERGEANT AT ARMS (SAA): Meeting Requirements and RSVP

Everyone must RSVP Yes or No. No later than the Friday prior to the meeting date!
EWI Program Coordinators must confirm attendance numbers with the hotel or other catering company in advance.

  • No shows are charged -- we need to have timely RSVPs into the Sergeant-at-Arms the Friday before the monthly meeting which is the second Wednesday of each month.

  • It costs EWI to pay for those that RSVP and don’t show. Once our numbers are confirmed with the hotel or other catering company, any no shows and any late cancellations must be charged in full.

  • EWI is required to pay for all of its registered guests, whether or not they attend.

Should you need to cancel your reservation by the Friday before the meeting, you MUST receive a confirming email from the SAA that your cancellation is received.  If you do not get a confirming email from SAA, your reservation is still in effect and you will need to pay for the dinner that was reserved for you.

Please remember to go online to http://www.springsewi.com/ and submit your RSVP or your Regrets. You may pay online if you like (this helps us tremendously too).  Please remember to do so NO LATER than the Friday prior to the meeting.

WAYS & MEANS COMMITTEE:

2011July_ways,meansSUCCESS AGAIN!!

WAYS AND MEANS

Once again thank you all for your support and encouragement for the golf tournament held in June.  It was a big success because of all of our chapter’s participation.  I would like to send a very special thank you to Mary Good Forsythe for her amazing  work on securing corporate sponsors/fundraising, her diligence and follow-up are what made this year’s event exceptional!
Special kudos to the Ways & Means committee members for their great ideas, the dedication & time committed are very much appreciated.

The tournament netted $16,749 for our scholarship program which means we can help more college students.  We are ready to begin preparing for next year’s event, so please begin talking to companies you have contact with to encourage them to budget for sponsorships, ideally we would like to have them confirmed in time to include their company logos in our promo materials.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE:

We found out at the Denver-Colorado Springs Chapter meeting from the corporate president, Sharon Bennett, about My EWI.  My EWI is on the corporate website on the home page on the left-hand side http://www.ewiconnect.com/   Many of the Colorado Springs chapter EWI’s were wondering what it is and had not heard about it.  So I am here to let you know about it.

My EWI is a SOCIAL NETWORK for members of EWI (social network like Facebook and Twitter but for EWI).  It’s a new tool for all members.  Go check it out.  It’s pretty easy to follow the directions.  It has a place for Groups which can include chapters, committees, membership, etc.  Forums is like a bulletin board to post a comment or ask a question.

I think My EWI will be helpful for our incoming board and to also help those who want to know and do more within our chapter and corporate organization.

Susan Davis
Membership Director
Colo Springs Chapter

WE WANT YOUR PARTICIPATION IN EWI!

Our Chapter does have a Member Firm Attendance Requirements:  Each Member Firm must be represented by a representative or an executive at seven (7) meetings within the Chapter year and must not miss three (3) consecutive meetings at any time during the term of the membership.  We also offer flexible membership whereby if a representative cannot attend a meeting that they can encourage and/or send another person from the firm to attend the monthly chapter meeting.   Our chapter encourages our firms and the representatives to be “member’s in good standing.”

Anytime is a Good Time To Get The Word Out About EWI Colorado Springs Chapter!

Let’s shake it up this summer.  EWI COLORADO SPRINGS IS A WELL KEPT SECRET!   LET’S CHANGE THAT AND GET THE WORD OUT.  EWI Corporate has challenged all chapters this year with new membership goals -- Suggested MINIMUM goals are 90% retention and 11 new member firms.  That is almost 1 per month!  We are already 90 days into our fiscal year.  Please help us succeed in this goal.  Growing our membership benefits the backbone of our chapter as well as our individual members and their firms.  If each one of us brings in one new member firm this year we will have successfully enhanced our own networking path and strengthened our ties to the EWI initiatives of Careers, Communities and Connections.

Please invite prospective members to the Chapter meetings.  Thank you for your referrals - keep them coming!  If you know of someone who might like to hear from us send their contact info to Susan Davis - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
