At the tender age of 19 I found myself working in the funeral industry. It began as a job while on break from college but grew into a passion and 28years later I noticed things had changed for the worse and I wanted to be part of a funeral home that could return to providing personal service, compassion and affordable prices of yester-years.
While I was born and raised in Arizona and spent a large part of my career there and the rest traveling the US, Canada, & Puerto Rico auditing funeral operations, my husband's family has been here in Colorado Springs for 5 generations. My husband, Arlen has been in the funeral industry 50 years, my son-in law and step-son are Funeral Directors, and so the natural fit was for us to open a full service funeral home here in "The Springs". We are also very fortunate to have a business partner who joined us; he too is a Funeral Director and has the same passion and experience level we have. As a team we all strive for excellence with every family we serve.
We knew starting a funeral home from the beginning would be a challenge, but we have been pleasantly surprised at the reception the community has given us in our first 13 months in business. We have exceeded our original projections and are continuing to grow.
Our philosophy is to educate the consumer to make smart choices, a funeral can be one of the largest purchases we make and in most cases it is not planned for, that's where the financial stress comes into play. We fully realize that people we talk with would not choose to use our service, but we are glad that they are better prepared when they walk out our door.
The gratitude families express to us after we serve them, is that we listened to their needs and worked to accomplish them at a price point they could afford. This is why we choose to serve our community.

Happy Valentine's Month!
by Pat Cooper, Wachovia |
|
In 2009 we will be facing challenges...within our own Chapter of EWI. We need your help in following areas:
-Talk up membership; bring guests to our incredible programs.
-Our golf tournament is just a few months away; time to start organizing your golf teams and golf sponsorships.
-Our Nominating Chair has started her slate for 2009-2010 Board members. Start researching the position that you would like to embrace next year.
-LCAM is only a few months away. We want a strong representation from Colorado Springs. Despite tightening of belts; can you think of creative ways to afford the cost of participating?
What a fabulous new Hospital we have in Colorado Springs and we were privileged to have our own personal tour and a renowned surgeon, Dr. Dirk Pikaart, provide us insight to state of the art surgical practices using the DaVinci Robot and the Cyberknife. Thank you programs committee for a fabulous program. I understand the program was a bit longer than the norm, but we hated to cut out the tour or reduce the speakers' time any more than what we had already cut.

Happy Valentine's!

Membership Campaign Incentives-
Each representative who recruits a new member firm during the period of October 1, 2008 - May 31, 2009 will receive a EWI eco friendly shopping bag with the new EWI logo. There is no limit on the number of shopping bags a representative can receive. Just make sure your name is listed as the recruiter on the New Member Application, Form 15. Each recruiter's name will be entered into a drawing for a 2009 LCAM registration. Three (3) separate drawings will be held based on which division your Chapter is in (Eastern, Central and Western).
There is no limit on the number of chances a representative can earn.
The TOP RECRUITER will also win a 2009 LCAM registration. (In the event of a tie, a random drawing will be held for this prize.)
NET GROWTH PLUS 1: Each Chapter that has at least one more member firm as of June 1, 2009 than it had on October 1, 2008 will receive a free registration for an EWI Online course ($175 value) to be used at the Chapter's discretion.
CHAPTER RETENTION: Each Chapter who retains 95% or more of their member firms at renewal will receive EWI eco friendly shopping bags with the new EWI logo for each of their Chapter members (active and sustaining).
The EWI Membership Campaign is in full swing. Since the onset of the campaign on October 1, 2008 we have 57 new firms; 38 in October and 19 in November! This is as of mid-December. As of November 30th we have recruited 355 firms in 2008.
We are so close to reaching our 2008 membership goal of 440 new firms. We only need 85 more firms to sign up by December 31, 2008. WE CAN DO THIS! If you have a firm on the hook, get them signed up before year-end.
Remember, dues increase $5.00 beginning January 1, 2009. Corporate dues will increase to $130, with B/C/DP staying at $40. EWI is still the best deal around for networking our firms and staying connected with our local community.

Teaser for Upcoming Program March 11, 2009
CARE AND SHARE FOOD BANK
Did you know that more than 130,000 people in southern Colorado are "food insecure" - meaning they don't know where their next meal is coming from? And did you know that 30% of those people are children, 30% are elderly or disabled and almost 40% come from households with working adults? These are not nameless, faceless people - these are our neighbors, our friends and our co-workers.
Care and Share Food Bank is working hard to bridge the gap between
hunger and abundance!
Come tour the new 50,000 square foot facility completed in January 2009 and learn more about this amazing organization and the efficient work they do every day to end hunger in southern
Colorado.
Care and Share has been voted Best Charity to Support in Colorado
Springs and was runner up for Best Community Board to Sit On, Best Non Profit Organization, and Best Up and Coming Business Leader under 40 for its Executive Director and CEO, Nicholas Saccaro.
Come see for yourself how Care and Share distributes over 12 million
pounds of food each year to over 430 nonprofit agencies. You will be
amazed! Mark you calendars NOW!

Ways & Means Committee:
Hello Ladies,
The sponsorship letters have gone out to the EWI membership and we are looking forward to hearing from each of you as to how you/your company wants to participate – as a sponsor, putting together a foursome or contributing a door prize or goodie bag item. Please contact us as soon as possible with your company’s sponsoring commitment. We need 100% participation – this is the one event that funds our scholarship program!
We have also begun soliciting outside, non-EWI corporate sponsors. We need for each of you to think “outside the box” for businesses, friends, your personal sphere that you can talk to about being involved for this year’s tournament. If you prefer, just send us the person/business information & we will gladly contact them.
We need your help!
Thank You! Joan Taylor & Mary-Good Forsythe

January 2009 Meeting
Penrose St. Francis
|
If you did not get to experience the January meeting, you missed a
fabulous event! EWI kicked off the 2009 season with a meeting at the
new St. Francis Medical Center. SFMC is the city's newest and only
full-service hospital located in Northeast Colorado Springs. STMC is
part of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services and Centura Health.
The evening started with a welcome by Mark Hartman, COO of St. Francis
Medical Center. Then the ladies were treated to a tour of the facility
by Patrick Menzies, V.P. of Business Development and Mark Hartman.
Those who took the tour were able to see the Cardiac unit, a labor and
delivery room, the beautiful chapel and lenticular wall, the stained
glass window that used to hang in the original St. Francis Hospital,
and more.
After the tour we enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Chef Olson - the
resident chef at St. Francis Medical Center. The meal was beautifully
presented and was quite a surprise to those who think hospital food is
not very good. Since we were treated to "Chef's Choice" dessert we had
the option of 3 different desserts........and were encouraged to trade
if you didn't get the one you really wanted.
The speaker for the evening was Dr. Dirk Pikaart. Dr. Pikaart is a
gynecological oncologist who specializes in the use of the Da Vinci
robot in his surgery practice. He shared the latest statistics about
cancer, symptoms, treatments, and "cure" rates. He also showed a video
of a laparoscopic hysterectomy. While graphic - the video was
fascinating and generated a lot of questions by the audience.
The evening was capped off with a new celebration for EWI - a birthday
cake with the names of all of the members who have a January birthday.
Starting in 2009, each month, we will be celebrating member birthdays
with a decorated cake. Happy Birthday to all of our January members!
