Our newest member, Kathryn A. Curry, is the owner of the local Home Instead Senior Care franchise covering El Paso and Teller County. Home Instead Senior Care is the world's largest provider of non-medical home care. This franchise and the concept of non-medical home care was founded in 1994 in Omaha, Nebraska by Paul and Lori Hogan.
Kathryn bought her franchise in June 1997 after meeting the owners in Las Cruces, NM while visiting a friend. She became franchise #77. There are now over 800 franchises worldwide. The primary focus of Home Instead Senior Care is to assist those who wish to stay at home safely by providing meal planning and preparation, medicine reminders, light housekeeping, assistance with personal care, other activities of daily living as well as shopping and errands. Her company employees 150 trained caregivers providing care and compassion to those at home, from as little as 2 hours a day up to 24 hours a day. She and her great staff have grown this company to over $2MM in gross revenues and have served over 1500 clients in the area in the last 12 years.
Home Instead Senior Care national franchise in these past 15 years has done some remarkable research and designed materials that have been incredibly beneficial to families and health professionals. One of the most useful websites is Caregiverstress.com. This site allows individuals to confidentially respond to questions to determine the stress level they may be at, the dangers of too much stress and then be able to read about options for relieving stress. Another helpful site is the 4070talk.com which is an interactive and informative site allowing adult children as well as older parents or relatives look at ways to bridge or begin conversations about life issues before they become crises. This covers issues such as when is time to stop driving or why it is important to prepare Powers of Attorney or Medical Powers of Attorney and when is it the right time to seek assistance in the home with activities of daily living or is assisted living a better alternative. Kathryn is available is give talks to groups on these topics and others to help answer questions and identify when it is time to take action especially on things such as senior fraud, depression, dementia and a host of other issues.
Kathryn grew up with her grandmother and two great aunts in Beatrice, NE. She graduated from Doane College in Crete, NE with a major in Business and Economics. She then went on to complete her MBA at the University of NE. She has two adult children, Adam and Mary. Her children are both married but no grandchildren just yet. She claims to be the grandmother to her son and daughter-in-law's two dogs. She loves dog sitting. Her son lives here and is a free lance graphic artist. Her daughter is an attorney and is the law clerk to the Honorable Judge Susan Cox in Chicago, Ill. She loves animals and is an avid bicyclist and reader. She has completed the ride across NE, IA and GE. She also completed the Lance Armstrong Ride for the Roses in Austin TX where she rode in honor and memory of 47 of her friends and family. She also loves to ski and hike and play in the dirt! The most unusual and fun thing she has done is to learn Olympic weightlifting to help strengthen her osteoarthritic back! Her most recent accomplishment was to back squat 125 lb. It has increased her bone density 8%!

The deer are chomping on the green sprouts, flickers are pecking on my chimney at ridiculous early morning hours and as I take my early morning walks, my senses are piqued for bears that should be emerging from their winter hibernation soon.
The energy that comes with Spring is refreshing and gives us that boost to continue on with New Year's resolutions, old, re-defined and maybe a whole new set of commitments.
As we Spring Clean our offices, minds, homes, yards and emails, remember your EWI Connections.

Hello Ladies of Colorado Springs EWI,
We are 2 months away from the golf tournament and still in need of any and all support we can get! We are tremendously appreciative to the sponsors that have committed so far: Ent, Pepsi Bottling Company, Re/Max Properties, Inc. (Bill & Mary-Good Forsythe & Mike Jensen), Re/Max Properties, Inc. (Ray Shea), Wells Fargo Insurance and Dianna Harris Law Offices - for a total of $11,000!
We have room for lots of Hole sponsors ($300 per hole / $150 per _ hole), a Putting Challenge sponsor ($500), Golf Cart sponsors ($50) and,, of course, "cold, hard cash" donations for those who believe in our mission & want to have a part in it.
As well, we need to bring in more door prizes - one of the aspects that has given our golf tournament such a popular reputation.
Please remember that this is our ONLY fundraiser! We're asking each of you, as members of EWI, to reach out to your co-workers, business contacts and sphere of influence to ask for help - many small contributions will add up. We know that we can make this our most successful golf tournament to date, but only with support and involvement from each of you.
HAVE YOU MADE YOUR CONTRIBUTION??
Thanks,
Joan & Mary-Good

The big, beautiful new Care and Share facility just east of Powers off Constitution was the setting for the EWI meeting held March 11th. During the extended networking time, guests were treated to a wide array of wines for their tasting pleasure and then a wonderful dinner buffet was provided by member firm, Food Designers. Table cards placed among the serving dishes alerted members to several facts about hunger in the southern Colorado community serviced by Care and Share Food Bank.
The very talented and charismatic CEO of Care and Share, Nicholas Saccaro, addressed the group after dinner and shared some staggering facts about food insecurity in our region and the work that is being done by the food bank to "bridge the gap between hunger and abundance". Most of the audience was not aware that Care and Share:
- Distributes almost 12 million pounds of food each year
- Has an agency network of over 400 members
- Services 31 counties throughout southern Colorado
- Provides food to almost 100,000 people annually
The food bank has just successfully completed an $8.4 million capital campaign and moved into its new facility in January 2009. After Nicholas explained the efficient way in which Care and Share brings in food and distributes it, he led the group on a tour of the building, including a stop at the gorgeous donor recognition wall designed by local artist, Harriet Lee, that depicts the food bank's business model in a beautiful tile rendering.
Thanks to all of you that attended, $255 dollars in cash was donated along with many pounds of non-perishable food. Thank you all for supporting the mission of Care and Share!
Three member firms were spotlighted during the March meeting. Kay Atwood of Orbit Promotions informed the attentive group of all the different kinds of promotional items her firm handles. Chris Ressler and Karen Lovett of Pikes Peak Regional Development told us that despite the depressing financial news we hear every day, now IS actually a good time to be investing in real estate. And Elva Munoz of Wells Fargo Business Banking Group discussed the many services her bank offers its clients (while also entertaining a friendly volley with fellow banking representative Barb Winter of Ent Federal Credit Union!). There were no March birthdays to celebrate but that didn't stop the EWIs from enjoying their cake.

Borrow instead of Buying! |
|
• Borrow instead of buying.
• Borrow from libraries instead of buying personal books and movies. This saves money, not to mention the ink and paper that goes into printing new books.
• Share power tools and other appliances. Get to know your neighbors while cutting down on the number of things cluttering your closet or garage.
• Keep electronics out of the trash.
• Keep your cell phones, computer, and other electronics as long as possible then recycle.
• Donate or recycle them responsibly when the time comes. E-waste contains mercury and other toxics and is a growing environmental problem.
• Make your own cleaning supplies.
• The big secret: you can make your own non-toxic cleaning supplies. All you need are a few simple ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, lemon, and soap.
• Making your own cleaning products saves money, time, and packaging-not to mention your indoor air quality.
To obtain local recycling information go to: http://www.thecityofcoloradosprings.com/recycling/index.html
Earth Day is April 22, 2009. Earth Day promotes environmental awareness and calls for the protection of our planet.
