Ooh la la, ready or not
the Holiday Season is here!!
by Pat Cooper, Wachovia |
|
I suspect that we are all kicking it up a notch to complete deadlines before they are overdue, plan a little time away from our offices to complete endless Holiday activities that require intimate detail that we as professional women strive for in our lives.
TOP five list of items to help you through this Season:
1. In your "To Do List", skip the last few items, the color of the ribbon does not matter, only that there is ribbon.
2. KISS - Keep It Simple Stu??? No time to bake, buy the pie..
3. Turn off the TV and listen to up lifting music, how many times do we have to listen who the finalist are for Dancing with the Stars?
4. The media has diluted us with news that we are in economic crisis. Aggressive EWI women as we are, we will prevail. Many of us will have new jobs next year, some are expanding their career opportunities by continuing education. Leave no rock unturned, opportunity awaits those that pursue it. Resources may be scarce, but inner resources are plentiful.
5. And finally, reach out to your EWI sister if you need help. We are the Connect part of our 3 C's.
Our December luncheon has an exciting new twist this year, which will provide you the opportunity to purchase take away Christmas gifts. Our Program Committee is committed to providing us maximum opportunities as busy professional women.
REFLECTION: This is the Holiday Season I enjoyed growing in a small Northern New Mexico village where the traffic was an item. We played cards with visiting family members into the early hours of the next morning; my mother would turn off the furnace and let the fires burn out, but we would just wrap ourselves in blankets and continue...Our very weak television signal was powered into our Valley by a booster to allow what limited viewing we had. The Padre on Sunday mornings would remind us to pay our booster bill so the signal would be turn on for all the football games and Holiday programs. Our television reception was still questionable but we finally had three channels instead of one by the time I was in High School. There were the Luminarias/Farolitos that the wind would blow out on Christmas Eve, but we persisted in re-lighting them endlessly. The hardest part of Christmas Eve was staying up for Mid-night Mass and getting all dressed up , I was a bit of a tom-boy. The preparation of food overwhelmed our senses; posole, tamales, bizcochitos, empanadas and of course the traditional turkey, ham and beef. I am fortunate to have the ability to spend the upcoming Holidays with our families both in Colorado and New Mexico this season. Reflect on your own positive memories and cherish time with your family and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving and Christmas to you and your families.
Pat Cooper

Ways & Means Committee:Hard to believe the end of October
is right around the corner! While it may be difficult to think about
golf with all the cold days ahead of us, spring will be here before we
know it and so will our 7th Annual Golf Tournament!
The Ways and Means team is looking for committee members to help make
this our best tournament yet. Over the next couple of weeks, we will
be making calls asking for your participation. There are several ways
to participate - sponsorship, door prize, goodie bags, putting a team
together, to name a few.
We look forward to visiting with you!

November Meeting
"Goodwill is more
than a store!"
|
 |
The venue was a bit unusual, but that helped to make last month's EWI meeting hosted by Goodwill Industries fun, upbeat and educational. EWI members met at Goodwill's newest Retail Center, still under construction, at 2007 S. Circle Drive. The store's Grand Opening is scheduled for December 13th. The push was on to finish some last minute exterior work including paving and landscaping to meet the November 15th opening of the drive-thru donation center. EWI ladies found the interior of the store to be a "work in progress." However, that did not dampen the enthusiasm for touring the facility and browsing through the limited amount of clothing that was on the racks. Before we knew it, a register was open and sales were being rung up!
A delicious dinner was catered by Garden of the Gods Gourmet and then the focus of the evening shifted from Goodwill bargains to rehabilitation services as Goodwill CEO and President Bob Baker gave a stirring talk about Goodwill's mission of providing training and employment that allows people to reach their fullest level of personal and economic independence and why retail sales are critical to this endeavor. A strong donated goods and retail program enabled Goodwill to offer more than 20 rehabilitation programs that provided 339,089 services to 39,906 people in 2007. Additionally in 2007, Goodwill placed more than 4,100 people in competitive jobs outside of Goodwill saving the community $16,398,590 in welfare subsidies! Bob explained that none of this work was possible without material donations, which were converted into sales, and then into programs.
When the evening closed, EWI members walked away with some good bargains and a much greater understanding of Goodwill and its critical importance to our community.
