Mountain States Pipe & Supply
|
 |
I consider myself to be a native of Colorado Springs even
though my father was in the military and I spent my adolescence
life moving every three years. We lived in many places,
with the most memorable being Monterey, CA, Virginia, Japan & Scotland.
When my father retired from the Marines, my parents chose to
come back to their home town of Colorado Springs. I attended
UCCS in Boulder and Colorado Springs and graduated in 2000
with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. After graduation,
I was very fortunate to be hired by Mountain States Pipe & Supply
as a staff accountant. Through the past 6 years I have
been promoted to Controller for the company and with the support
of my colleagues and the owners, I continue to mature and gain
experience in my professional career.
Mountain States Pipe & Supply was created in 1955 by Robert & Elnore
Sonneborn. Robert died in 1977 and Elnore retired in
1986. At that time David Wilcox bought the business. David
and his wife Janet, former EWI member, continued to grow the
company until 1993 when, unfortunately, David passed away of
cancer. David's daughter, Betsy Carroll and her husband
Paul were both actively involved in the company and became
the majority shareholders upon the retirement of Janet in the
late 90's.
MSPS is a full line distributor of underground utilities of
pipe, valve and fittings, as well as providing gas, water and
electric meters with complete solutions to automated meter
reading and infrastructure to customers. There are currently
160 employees spread among the six facilities: Rockdale TX.,
Phoenix AZ., Rancho Cucamonga CA., Frederick CO., and two locations
in Colorado Springs. The corporation is headquartered
in Colorado Springs at 111 West LasVegas St. MSPS is
a $40 million company with a customer base that includes Kinder
Morgan (Sourcegas), Denver Water Board, PG&E (Pacific,
Gas & Electric), Global Water and Colorado Springs Utilities. As
the company continues to diversify, we position ourselves as
a trusted leader in Automated Meter Reading and related technology. We
can provide our customers with a total solution from beginning
to end from the knowledge and experience of our sales and support
staff. Paul & Betsy Carroll, as owners of MSPS, continue
to drive the company into a new & exciting time. I
look forward to the ride and I am proud to be a part of the
experience.
My husband, Brain and I have a lovely home in the Old Farm
area that we share with our two English Pointers, Tikker and
Cody. Through my husband's support I continue to enjoy
my work and where I am at in my professional career.

As I finish up my year as President of the Colorado Springs Chapter
I would like to leave you with this inspirational quote:
"Smooth roads never make good drivers. Smooth seas never
make good sailors. Clear skies never make good pilots. A problem
free
life
never makes a strong and good person. Have a tough but winning
day ahead! Be strong enough to accept the challenges of life. Do
not ask life, 'Why me?' instead say, 'Try me!' " Author Unknown
The
ship has set sail this past year for our chapter to be a great
organization to be a part of. I hope all of you will continue
to care about EWI Colorado Springs, look within to be a leader
in
the chapter, step up to help membership grow, don't be afraid
to volunteer and get involved. Try it you'll like it! It's tremendous
to continue the 25 year history as one of the best women organizations

MANAGEMENT ADVANTAGE – COLORADO ASSOCIATION SERVICES
As
Management Advantage, we have provided exceptional service
to communities in the Colorado Springs area for over 17 years.
Our firm, along with three other high-quality Colorado management
firms, became Associate Members in the past two years.
Each firm selected an affiliation with Associate to
provide our association clients with the very latest in technology,
offer innovative programs and provide ongoing education to
both our clients and employees. As our three firms have worked
together over the past two years, we believe that in joining
together as a singularly focused company, we can provide
effective services and better value to association members.
Therefore, effective immediately, the three separate Associate
companies will come together under one name: Colorado Association
Services
(CAS).

In 1994 Colorado Mountain Reclamation Foundation was charged
with the responsibility to implement enhanced reclamation
plans for beautifying our mountain backdrop.
With thousands of volunteers, in kind and financial support
from hundreds of donors, organizational assistance from Executive
Women International and partnering with Castle Concrete, quarry
owners, the plans are now complete. Close to 15,000 trees and
shrubs are now thriving on the reclaimed quarry scars that
mar the Colorado Springs backdrop.
What is left to be done means a change in my job description.
For the next year or two I will be working closely with Castle
Concrete to ensure that they develop and implement the enhanced
reclamation they are required to do in their permit. Enhanced
reclamation means revegetating the quarry scar to improve the
view of our mountain backdrop. Colorado law does not require
enhanced reclamation but Castle has included a commitment to
do so in their permit.
For those of you in EWI who have worked so willingly and hard
to make our annual fundraising hikes a success and on behalf
of CMRF's board of directors I thank you all so much. I hope
you feel good about being such an important part of this community
improvement project. Your children and grandchildren will thank
you, too.
This calls for a celebration! You will be hearing more from
me.

August Meeting
"GOT MONEY" EWI & GIRL SCOUTS
by Lynn Severson, August Program Coordinator
The August 2008 EWI &Girl Scout partnership teaching
the Girl Scouts about money from their "Got Money" book
was a huge success. We had publicity from several sources, among
them KKTV, The Gazette Telegraph, the Business
Journal and Girl Scout media, due to the efforts of Susan Davis, Audrey Shrive
and Lynn
Severson. All was positive and showcased the Girl Scouts and EWI during the
event as well as an interview with Sandy Taylor of the Girl Scouts.
In an effort to combine Community, Careers and Connections from National EWI,
Susan, Sandy and I began planning this meeting in November, 2007. It was a
wonderful fit to prepare our young Girl Scouts for some of their future financial
needs
and knowledge. We had a superior group of volunteers to bring this project
to fruition.Sandy Taylor, Marty Lockhart and Molly Gustafson
worked from the Girl Scout
team. Our EWI participants at the 7 stations were Debbie Tuzel ( Art of Design
i.d.)-
Budgeting and Savings; Joan Taylor (ENT Federal Credit Union)- Where Do I
Put My Money; Rita Worster (BKD, LLP)- Rule of 72, Power of Compounding;
Megan
McLaughlin (Phoenix Consulting)- Investment Basics; Brandy Merriam (Presidential
Brokerage)-
Stock Market, Bull & Bear Markets, NYSE, DJIA; Karen Lovett ( Pikes Peak
Regional Development) - Loans, Credit and Setting Goals; Elva Munoz (Wells
Fargo), Online Banking- The Future. Susan Davis facilitated the meeting where
the Girl
Scouts and their interested parents moved from station to station to complete
the "Got Money" course and earn a charm.
We were very fortunate to be able to use the Colorado College Historic Bemis
Hall for our meetng (facilitated by Connie Dudgeon, Susan and Lynn). It was
donated to CC for a women's dormitory by Alice Bemis Taylor. She specified
that it should always be a dorm for women and that ice cream should be served
at every meal;
thus Bon Appetit was pleased to locate wooden spoons for our dessert at the
event.
We would like to again thank all of the participants and our EWI membership
for this wonderful event. We served the EWI mission and all had a great time
and
learned from the collaboration of the Girl Scouts and EWI for our "Got
Money" Event.
