February Meeting Summary

GREENING YOUR BUSINESS

There are ways individually and through our companies where each of us can make a difference to the Colorado Springs community.  At the EWI February monthly meeting, we heard Jackie Rockwell, Assistant Director of Catamount Institute and Meike Alberts, an member of the Colorado Springs EWI chapter who owns Perquest Payroll Services, tell us ways we can improve our business practices.

The Pikes Peak Sustainable Business Network is brought to our community by the Catamount Institute.  It is a membership network of professionals and businesses to support community initiatives.   PPSBN provides tools, resources, awareness, and inspiration to business leaders seeking to incorporate sustainable practices in their decision making and strategic planning.   This is done by the triple bottom line of people-planet-profit.  Jackie gave several examples of well-known businesses in Colorado Springs that have made definite decisions to make small changes to their businesses like "making a statement" (Old Town Bike Shop), or "trying to change the planet" (Metech Recycling) or "thinking differently to save money" (Cheyenne Mountain Resort).  She recommended that "green teams" be formed in your business to begin making small changes and you will begin to be a part of the answer to develop an environmentally rich community.   Go to their website at http://ppsbn.org/ and see all the community businesses that are part of this innovative network.

It was great to have one of our own EWI member firms, Perquest and Meike Alberts to share her thoughts for the second part of the program of "Greening Your Business."  Perquest is a member of PPSBN and received the Colorado Gold Environmental Leader Award from PPSBN.  She shared with the EWI members "why she is interested in sustainability?"  She told us that she wants her business to protect the planet for the next generation.  She shared that her company, Perquest, does different things to be innovative and socially responsible.  She continues to fully embrace being a community partner and raising awareness for environmental stewardship.

It was a delightful evening at Patty Jewett Clubhouse, we were all engaged in the information that was communicated and sharing ideas and ways we can help our businesses create solutions, collaborate ideas and education for each of us to become part of the solution for economical, ecological and social change.
