Spotlight On...

The Gesundheit Center

Kim Roseland

The Gesundheit Center is the beginning of a dream.  Right now, it is a place where you will find a Naturopathic Doctor.  Naturopathy is a complete science of healing which incorporates all the good there is in the healing art in conformity with the laws of God, Nature, and Humanity.  It does not incorporate drugs or surgery, which remain the purview of the Medical Doctor.  Rather than addressing symptoms and specific diseases, it is the task of the Naturopath to help the individual work out what needs attention and how to do that in order to allow body, mind, and spirit to become strong enough together to allow a natural return to health.  The premise is that if we are born healthy, we should be able to retain that health.  As a Naturopath, I have a responsibility to teach as well.  I strongly believe that if people can learn to listen to themselves and understand what they need, they will become able to go forward in health and overall wellness on their own.

When you go to a Naturopath, you can expect the first visit to be around 1 1/2; hours.  There are a lot of questions to be asked.  You will come back in a day or two to discuss a plan.  This plan may involve lifestyle modifications, food changes, and perhaps an addition of herbs or other nutritional supplements. If there is a need for specific therapies such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy, or any of a host of others, you will be referred to an expert and the program will be coordinated.  Eventually, it is hoped that the Gesundheit Center will be a place you can come  and find  all of these things under one roof.  It is planned that we can eventually provide midwifery, elder care, counseling, hypnotherapy, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, art, music, and light therapy, and we hope to have an M.D. present so that we can provide truly complementary care in a setting that is comfortable, and as diverse as possible.

Currently, I am located in the office of Kelly Wood at Stading & Wood Chiropractic in Southgate.  The address is 635 Southpointe Crt. Suite 220.  I do schedule evening hours and have some classes scheduled through PILLAR.  More classes are being developed on a variety of topics such as diet, women's issues, men's health, and stress.  Trips are being arranged for small groups that will incorporate some fun and some learning.

I moved to Colorado Springs about 16 years ago. Before coming here, I had earned an undergraduate degree in Medical Technology and had performed my internship at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut.  I practiced in a small hospital in Connecticut and ran a blood bank there where we treated many cancer patients, among others.  This was not quite challenging enough and, the hours were keeping me distracted from my two children.  My scientific training enabled me to obtain a job in engineering which paid better and had more normal hours.  Mentally, I never could quite leave medicine.  Medicine was what I wanted but I was looking for more than what I had seen.  I continued studying everything I could find on healing and wellness while I continued to work in engineering and then consulting while I raised my children.  After working formally through an MBA in Operations Management and another in International Business, I still felt that nagging pull to go back and commit to something I had not yet put a name to.  Finally, I realized that Naturopathy, Herbs, and Holistic healing were what really kept me interested,  To date, I have a doctorate in Naturopathy and I'm working on a second in Holistic Healing.

I am a certified Medical Technologist and, as such, can work easily with Medical Doctors to assist patients where drugs and surgery are not called for.  I am board certified by both the American Naturopathic Certification and Accreditation Board, and the American Naturopathic Medical Association, the nation's oldest and largest American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, founded in 1981.  ANMA is a nonprofit, scientific, educational organization, dedicated to exploring new frontiers of mind, body, medicine and health.  It is open to individuals with Doctor of Naturopathy (N.D.) or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.M.D.), as well as other health care fields.  Some of the members hold other medical degrees: M.D., D.O.,D.D.S., O.M.D., H.M.D., and D.C.  All members have a strong commitment to the philosophy, art and science of natural theraputics. They subscribe to the motto "Doctor do no harm."

Thank you for the welcome to EWI and I sincerely hope I can make a positive contribution!

President's Message

Change Is In The Air

by Sally Seidlitz

Time has gone by so quickly.  It was 9 months ago when I became president and now I'm at the end of my term.  It has been an interesting year not only for EWI but also for me. At the beginning of the year I figured I'd have lots of time to work with EWI because my business was almost running itself.  Then, my lab manager and her husband got the opportunity to move back home to California.  All of a sudden, in March, I needed to run my business again.  With each thing that has come along in my life I see it as a time for learning.  Change is a good thing.  It gave me time to reinvent my business by adding a new 4-color printing press, which will help me maintain my growth as a small business.  I know that if I hadn't been pushed back into my business I would never have looked at this additional piece of equipment.

What a time of change for our Ways & Means committee.  They went from selling flowers at our meetings to a golf tournament. Loads of time has gone into the planning and organization of such a large task.  It just shows what can be done when a group of women get together.

Our membership is the 4th largest in the country.  It's obvious that we understand we need relationships with other successful women.  At the end of the year we will lose some of our members because they haven't connected or gotten involved.  This is so sad.  I remember a few years ago, I almost walked away, but a group of you encouraged me to get involved and for that involvement I have received the gift of long-term friendships.  Why would anyone not want to stay?

I have lots to be thankful for.  Thank you to the board for all your support and for carrying me through this year.  Thank you to the general membership for your encouragement and supportive words. You have all made this a very fun and positive experience.  I have been honored to serve as president of such a wonderful organization.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Last Month's Meeting

USAFA:  New Leadership's "Agenda for Change"

The EWI August dinner meeting was held in the Sunrise Room at the Officers' Club at the United States Air Force Academy on a beautiful summer evening.  Our meeting featured the new Vice Commandant of Cadets, Colonel Debra D. Gray.  Col. Gray shared her background, which commenced as one of the first female graduating cadets from the Academy.  From that beginning, she has had several varied missions including flight navigation, strategic planning in Washington, and cadet leadership and instruction, among others.  She is now part of the new Academy team addressing the elements of the USAFA "Agenda for Change."  Her position includes specific responsibilities for creating an atmosphere that ensures that officer development and academic excellence are maintained to the highest standards.  She also acts as an ombudsman for the Commandant and Superintendent, and additionally is responsible for overseeing Academy sexual climate issues.  Col. Gray is one of those rare individuals who balances her many credentials and positions of high authority with an extremely warm and engaging personality.

Did You Know?

by Wanda Reaves

Another native Colorado Springer in our midst!  She attended Longfellow Elementary and East Junior High. She graduated from Wasson High School in 1977, then attended Colorado Mountain College for two years.  She became somewhat of a ski bum while there with a job as ski hostess. Later she worked for Aspen Highland Bank before returning to Colorado Springs.

She enjoys being a mother to daughter Molly, 18, who plays volleyball and basketball and Cory, 17, who is very active in soccer, football, baseball and basketball.  Molly goes off to the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley this fall.  Mom is already wondering what their lives will be like when Cory leaves for college, too.  She and her husband's social lives revolve around the sports schedules of their children.

Her husband is Ric Fauver and he is the owner/operator of Thornton-Huber Orthopedics Company here in Colorado Springs.  They have been happily married for nineteen years.  They love to go dancing at Cowboys when there isn't a sporting event going on.  She loves animals and they have four Labradors and two cats.

This active woman even has time to volunteer!  She is a member of the Women's Foundation Girls in Technology Task Force.  We had an interesting discussion about their effort to interest more girls in choosing technology as a career field.  Apparently girls are interested until they reach about seventh or eighth grade then their interest is more focused on the "cool guys" not the "nerds" who take computer classes!  Oh well, there is an old Yiddish saying "We grow too soon old and too late smart".  Her church work is an important part of her life.  She sometimes teaches Sunday school and works at church Christmas pageants.  She volunteers also from time to time at the Humane Society.

She enjoys running with her four dogs and exercising with Yoga.  Yoga has been a life changing experience for her and she loves it.  It has helped to center her and enjoy life more.

Anything Irish is wonderful for this woman.  She and Ric traveled to Ireland in 2000 and visited the home of her ancestors and established links with other members of her clan.  She loves reading Maeve Binchey, the author who writes such marvelous tales of Ireland.

She holds an important position as Director of Information Technology in her company not only for this Colorado Springs location but for three other locations; two in Arizona and one in New Mexico.

EWI has meant a lot to her since she joined in 2000 to become a second representative for her company.  Her company is a charter member.  She has made many friends and has grown professionally.  She considers our EWI Chapter a support group, as well.  (Author's note:  I distinctly remember noticing that this member was involved from the very beginning of her membership with us.  No one had to beg her or push her either.  She is now on our board and is highly thought of for her friendliness, smiling face, professionalism and reliability. She is definitely a good role model for new members who want to get the most out of EWI.)

Now you know who it is I am sure. If you haven't guessed yet, her name is ... Click here to find out!
