Old West Cigar and
Homebrew Supply

Rep/Owner: Georgianna Lee

Old West Homebrew has been teaching people to brew their own beer and wine since 1992. Now the oldest homebrew store in the State of Colorado and in the top 10% nationwide, we continue to provide quality products and customer service to help the brewer in every step of the process. Recent advances in winemaking ingredient kits have brought the customer a product that produces a wine equal to or better than commercially made wines for about $3.00 per bottle. The appeal to making your own wine is that it’s easy, fun and you have great wine to enjoy. Add a custom designed label and bottle top dressing for your own unique wine for gift giving.

As a compliment to the homebrew business, Old West Cigar Company was added in 1997 as a separate business next door. We specialize in the smaller boutique cigar brands as well as personalized service. The staff at Old West will assist

you in choosing just the right cigars for gift giving or personal enjoyment, but be prepared for a few questions so that we may help you with your selection. Our cigars are kept in an electronically climate controlled walk in Spanish cedar humidor to keep them in optimum condition.

Another service that we offer is a full commercial cigar program for upscale bars and restaurants. We have a unique program that provides not only a humidor set-up, custom menus and delivery service, but in house staff training for the business’s employees. Businesses find that cigars compliment their establishment in providing the customer another reason to stay and enjoy their time there.

Birth, golf tournament, wedding or special occasion? You can have a private cigar band designed for as few as 50 cigars. We have provided cigars for groups as diverse as the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo and the El Paso Club, as well as numerous weddings and golf tournaments.

In January, we moved to a bigger and brighter location with plenty of free parking. Please come by and visit anytime. For more information on brewing and winemaking you can visit us at www.oldwestbrew.com.

But how did this all start? As a hobby back when we were living in Massachusetts. In 1990, Digital Equipment transferred Gary to Colorado Springs and shortly thereafter the lay offs started. Wanting to get out of the corporate world we decided to turn our hobby into a small business. In the early days, it was indeed small as we started in our hometown of Woodland Park, but it grew quickly when we moved the business to the Springs in 1992. We had one of the first web sites for homebrew supplies, thanks to Gary’s insistence. Our home is still in Woodland Park. On occasions, you’ll find our two children, Stephanie (24) and Michael (22), who grew up in the business still helping out. We’ve all made a lot of good friends over the years and have enjoyed all the people we’ve met.

Cigars – the affordable luxury! Cigar smoking is a lifestyle - not a habit.

President's Message

Women Rule
EWI Rule

By Linda Williamson

Recently I noticed a campaign sign reading “Bush Rule”. So I thought:

WOMEN RULE

EWI RULE!

I'm Linda Williamson and I approve this message. (Sorry, the elections got in my blood.)

There are many organizations you could belong to, but you chose EWI. You may not know it, but your Board is happy to serve and represent EWI. If I were running a campaign, I would promise you:

Superior programs

Never another dues increase

Respectful use of your time

Okay, I'll come back to reality. I would love to do those things, but I do know we sometimes fail you. We do offer a forum to exchange ideas, information and knowledge. Opportunity to see and experience places and people we ordinarily would not go to or meet. A platform to talk about our firms, locally and across the country. Speaking of which, I witnessed Nancy Kelly do an amazing job of selling her firm at the 2003 Denver Convention. She booked business that year in Hawaii. You Go Girl! I have used my EWI directory to call women I have never met, to conduct business. The mere mention of EWI easily and responsively opens doors. You should try it!

I wish to take the opportunity to plug my firm: You already know the beauty of the Broadmoor Hotel, but you may not know the management style of our CEO, Steve Bartolin. I would like to pattern my management style after his. He considers his people as assets and I promise to consider our members as assets.

Happy Thanksgiving!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

October Political Forum by Penny Sayre

The October meeting was held at the Pioneer Museum, truly a local treasure and an example of great community foresight. After a catered dinner and wine, we moved upstairs to the beautifully restored courtroom for our meeting. EWI President, Linda Williamson, called the meeting to order and introduced Kathy Wallace and Kathryn Flobeck, who enthusiastically described their experiences as attendees at the recent EWI Leadership Convention and Annual Meeting in New Orleans. All the Chapter’s six convention attendees thanked the members for sending them to the convention and for the wonderful experience they had. Carol Kennis, the program coordinator at the Museum, presented an interesting history of the Pioneer Museum.

After the business meeting, a panel of four well-known local experts discussed current local ballot initiatives. Marcy Morrison, currently mayor of Manitou Springs, was the moderator. Panel members were: Sallie Clark, currently a Colorado Springs City Council member, who discussed the transportation initiative; Liz Feder, a history professor at Colorado College, discussed the public health initiative; and Karen Teja, a District 11 School Board member, discussed District 11 School Board Ballot Proposals. The panel received great questions from the audience, and we all went home better informed. The very knowledgeable moderator and panel members provided valuable information to the audience, and we appreciated their time to come and talk to us.

Did You Know?

by Wanda Reaves

This “all together” woman knew what she wanted and she went after it! And guess what? She got it! To get her foot in the door, she was willing to take a clerical position. Needless to say, she ended up in the management position she wanted and has served thirteen years in her department.

She is bi-lingual and hales from the Deep South where she learned to speak the Creole language. She left her hometown of Eunice, Louisiana when she was twelve years old and moved west to Colorado Springs. She graduated from Palmer High School and Blair Business College.

She stays healthy by playing singles tennis every Monday night and Thursday morning with a doubles group. At home, she keeps up the exercise with kick boxing and doing pilates exercises. (Frankly, I wouldn’t want to arm wrestle her!) One of her favorite pastimes is dancing. She tried to teach me some Zydeco steps without much success, I’m afraid. Her homes, since marriage, have been Oceanside, California, Las Vegas, Nevada and Mombassa, Kenya. She loved living in Kenya for the two years that she and her husband served there. Her husband now owns a business selling supplies to the military.

They have two high achieving children, and I am not surprised. Tiffany has applied for her post-baccalaureate in medicine from New York City College. Brian graduated from Colorado University with a law degree. He served as an El Pomar Fellow before moving to Seattle where he practices law.

Two of her favorite novels are Cane River by Lalita Tademy and Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen Carter. She loves movies with Denzel Washington “because he is so easy on the eyes.” She especially liked Running Out of Time, Remember the Titans and The Notebook. Another favorite is Gone With The Wind. This busy lady does relax now and then. She goes on walks, takes hot baths, or listens to music to relax.

She is impressed by the caliber of women she has met in the five years that she has been an EWI member. She loves the new friends and the fun times she has with them. “When I joined, I was not familiar with the organization, but it has helped me explore opening my world to new ideas.”

I guess you could say that her field chose her. Many years ago, while working for Holly Sugar Corporation, she started buying for them. When there was an opening in purchasing she was selected and she found that she loved sourcing products and negotiating. Now you are getting close….you’re right, it’s our very own President of the Colorado Springs EWI Chapter, Linda Williamson, Purchasing Manager for the Broadmoor Hotel.

What does EWI mean to me?

Beth Alexander, Cachet Baskets Company

My first exposure to EWI was…..you guessed it, Sally Seidlitz. There are a number of EWI members whose first exposure can be attributed to this wonderful lady. Sally and I go way back and she tried for a number of years to get me involved. The first meeting I attended was The Cavalcade of Firms event that year and I was bowled over by the energy, enthusiasm and camaraderie of the group. I was hooked. They had me at "Hello."

In the years that followed, I have experienced the things one would expect, great contacts and referrals, but more importantly business partners, life long friendships and relationships that will last far beyond the life of Cachet Baskets. The opportunity to be in the company of so many amazing women is not just inspirational, it feeds my soul, provides constant motivation to be better, and offers an unending supply of support and advice.

Joining the EWI Board was a decision to get more involved and an attempt to get to know the membership better. What has come of that involvement is a greater appreciation for the hard work it takes to keep an organization of this caliber and size moving forward toward our scholarship goals and overall mission. I was fortunate to attend the last years EWI convention in Denver as a delegate. It was then, that I realized just how strong our local chapter is. Our membership alone ranks us with much larger cities such as Houston and Dallas, but the real difference is in the number of actual business owners and high ranking positions that make up the bulk of our group. We are one powerful contingent of eclectic, savvy, forward thinking ladies.

If you are a member of EWI and you have not felt the “energy” that I am speaking of ……..GET INVOLVED! Join the board or get on a committee and get to know your fellow members. Chances are, though, you have “felt the energy”, it’s almost palpable.

So here’s to the power and the light that is EWI .
