Spotlight On...

Management Advantage, Inc.

Beth Jones

Beth Jones is the president and CEO of Management Advantage Inc.; a twelve year old company dedicated to professional property management. Beth and her nine employees specialize in the management of condominium and homeowner associations and office parks and her husband, company VP Bert Stewart, manages approximately 70 residential homes.

Beth moved to Colorado Springs from Schererville, Indiana in 1982 with her 16 year old son in hopes of curing their asthma. The clean, dry air and sunshine did stop their wheezing and coughing. Beth's daughters did not move with them as one was in the Navy and the other was in college; however, they did later make Colorado their home as did Beth's mother.

Beth had been divorced from the children's father ten years before moving here. During that time she worked as a real estate broker selling residential property and she also co-owned a boutique linen store for three years. Beth sold herself a townhome and became president of the homeowners association, which eventually led to her career change to HOA management.

Beth remarried in 1985 and she and her husband moved "up the pass". They bought a home in Chipita Park where they lived until this summer when they bought another home just seven blocks away. Beth's husband had two daughters; collectively they now have eleven grandchildren, but only two live in Colorado Springs.

Beth is involved in their church, Holy Rosary Chapel in Cascade, and serves as Eucharist minister, Proclaimer, and choir member. She is active in the Community Association Institute both locally and as a member of the national faculty. She holds the Professional Community Association Manager (PCAM) designation and her company is the only Accredited Association Management Company (AAMC) in Colorado Springs.

Beth earned her bachelors degree in communication in 1992 from UCCS where she met and became good friends with her EWI sponsor Kathy Kelly. A drawing of both of them in their caps and gowns still holds a prominent place in Beth's office. Their husbands are both avid fisherman and have also become friends.

In Beth's free time, she enjoys skiing, camping, fishing, traveling, gardening, writing, and reading. You may have read her articles in the real estate section of the Gazette. She looks forward to adding EWI activities into her busy schedule and has joined the program committee at her friend Kathy's invitation.

President's Message

The Journey Has Begun

By Marti Hartman

It's less frightening for me to look at this year as a Journey rather than a Presidency.

Sharon Berthrong suggested several years ago that I think about "Being President".  I thought about it long enough for my stomach to turn over and my hands to begin shaking involuntarily.  And then I said, "No, but thanks".

Something happened somewhere between then and now.  I don't know what, but I do know that when I think of this year as part of a journey, it's much less intimidating.  And the truth is, serving on a committee or the Board in any capacity is the only way to truly experience the Colorado Springs Chapter of EWI.

Each one of us can choose to sit on the outside, not actively serve on a committee, not get involved, and I guarantee one thing - we will not have experienced EWI.

It's a Journey, and it begins by getting involved.  You can't take a trip without getting involved and actually going.  Colorado Springs EWI is the same - get involved and enjoy the Journey.   IT'S A TRIP!!

Here's the first step in YOUR journey - contact one of the Committee Chairs listed herein and join the committee; join the fun; enjoy the Journey.

AND LET'S HEAR IT ONE MORE TIME FOR THE WAYS AND MEANS COMMITTEE!

Here's the bottom line - $14,274 was raised for the Colorado Springs Chapter ASIST Scholarship Fund.

The Committee, led by Verna Severson and Joan Saucerman, accepted the challenge to do a fund raising Golf Tournament.  Bea Steahlin had been pushing the idea for who-knows-how-long, and someone finally said "OK - OK!! We'll do it" (it appears Bea was a bit persistent in her pursuit).  I'm not sure anyone knew how successful this would turn out to be.

Thank you again to Committee Co-Chairs, Verna Severson, Joan Saucerman, and their hard-working, dedicated committee-Kathy Kelly, Lanonah Krumanocker, Carol Odell, Kim Roseland, Jean Roblewsky, Bea Steahlin, Susan Wilmot, and Janice Zerbe.

And a HUGE thank you to all the sponsors and supporters.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Last Month's Meeting
De-Stress Yourself!

Last month's EWI meeting took place at the new, fabulous YMCA on the south end of town. Members got to see the indoor pool with beach and other Y facilities. An excellent meal was prepared by member firm the Food Designers. Kelly Wood and Linda Bloom of Wood Bloom led the group in distressing exercises. Their techniques empower people to explore new adventures, discover how to heal themselves, and develop hidden talents. Remember, everyone, trace your seams, figure 8's, visualization and BREATHE!!!

Did You Know?

by Wanda Reaves

We have all known her for a long time.  She is an active member of EWI and she seldom misses a meeting.  Her prickly sense of humor gives us a lot of laughs.

Having lunch with her was something I would like to do more often.  (That's the best thing about writing this column is that I can get to know EWI members on a different level).

She was born in Tecumseh, Oklahoma and moved to Colorado Springs when she was thirteen.  Her Army father served in World War ll and the Korean wars.

He was most often stationed at a military facility in the Texas and Oklahoma area so he could be home on the weekends and his family didn't have to move so often.

She has three sisters and a brother.  Her sister Marion is a professor at George Pepperdine University in California.  Missouri is home for her sister Pat who is a physical therapist.  Her brother John Patrick is a successful artist and lives in California.  (He is very good.  I looked him up on the web and his work is really good).  Sister Linda lives right here in Colorado Springs and has partnered with a friend to start a new business after years of teaching special students for District 11.  The real star of this family is this EWI member's mother!  I liked her right away when I met her several years ago.  She is 91 years old and has the mind and wit of a thirty year old!  She is an avid reader and has written a book of poetry which I enjoy having on my bedside table.

Our EWI friend doesn't read as much as her mother but she listens to books on tape since she is in her car a lot.  Her favorite authors are Tony Hillerman and Julie Garwood.  (I would have never labeled her a romantic but there you are - another thing I learned about her).

The high light of her life was when she physically ran into John Wayne as he was walking out of the elevator at the Broadmoor leaving her speechless for several minutes until someone walked up to her and asked her if she was okay!  Not only did he leave her speechless but he left her with an autograph.

She has traveled to England, Scotland and Hawaii and loves Scotland.  That is the land of her ancestors and the land itself is most beautiful to her - once she got past the kilts, that is.

(Authors note:  I have left her career to the very last so that it would not be so easy for you to guess who this is).

She talks of her work with enthusiasm.  Home health care is something that interests her a great deal.  On the human resources side of health care she has a variety of responsibilities. They are hiring, firing, compliance issues, investigation of workplace issues, awards, etc.  Her office supplies nurses for home health care in much of Southern Colorado.  While her office is here in the Springs work takes her to Canon City and Pueblo on a regular basis.  Included in the 200 employees that she works with are higher skilled nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and technicians delivering care to home-bound patients.  They are assigned on an as-needed basis by physicians and work on a flexible schedule which makes it attractive to many candidates.  A normal work week is 24 to 28 visits a week with five to seven visits a day.  While she loves her job the most difficult thing she sometimes has to do is to terminate an individual.

Her career in human resources began at the Broadmoor Hotel where she worked for thirty-five years until three years ago when she began with Centura Health.  She sometimes helps in her sister's new retail venture called Celtic Mercantile Shop when needed on a weekend.  I have been there a few times and the shop has wonderful gift items.  The store has useful items as well as unique items which make it a great place for Christmas shopping.

When I asked her the important question, "What would you do if you were Queen for a day", I awaited her answer expecting a profound answer and what I got was, "Sleep in late"!

So there you are.  You know by now who this is I am sure.  Click here to find out!

Congratulations!

The theme for this honor is “touching the hearts of Colorado Springs.” Presentations will be made by the Honorable Marcy Morrison, the first Humanitarian Award Recipient. Cost is $100 per person. For reservations and information, call 599-0319.

From Nancy Kelly - "After the Denver meeting and driving my Hawaiian ladies around, one of their bosses phoned me in a panic as several of his staff had quit. He had wanted to hire me to implement PDP, a hiring, coaching, and team communication software system months ago, but couldn't quite take the plunge. Well, ladies. I leave for Hawaii on Oct. 19 - Nov.1 to work for the Pearl City Nursing Homes implementing PDP. So EWI provided me with a wonderful business opportunity and fun to boot."
