President's Message
Leadership
by Kathleen O'Leary
|
|
Hello, Executive Women – it’s GREAT to be here!
I am so enjoying being your leader this year. It has been both challenging and rewarding. I have learned so much about myself and about what it can take to be an effective leader.
There are many theories as to what the best leadership traits are and debates on whether you are born with them or if you can learn them.. Well, I will leave those ‘theories’ to the experts, but I will share with you a few things I have learned being your leader.
There are a few behaviors that most experts agree that are effective in leading:
Influencing culture:
I feel that within our board and within the chapter we have created a culture of being positive, creating specific solutions and being action driven. Each month at the board meetings we talk about each of our committees or responsibilities in an environment that is rich with support and is goal oriented. Take some time to read the board meeting minutes. You will be able to see this about your board.
Sharing information:
The information flow from the chapter leadership is constant with others on the board, with the corporate office, as well as with the chapter. We have an excellent method of communication with the chapter– our monthly Pulse newsletter – that is an incredible way to share information consistently. It is very professionally done and a lot of effort goes into it each month. You will learn so much about our chapter reading it monthly – by being informed about your chapter you can expect to get more value for your membership.
Forming relationships:
I believe that forming individual relationships is so critical to making the EWI experience full and rewarding. It is my role to facilitate this experience for all the members and I hope that is accomplished by each of us being warm and open to new members as well as those that have been around for along time! Another way is to join a committee or be on the board. Once you have a personal relationship with another member it becomes about the relationship and not just about being an anonymous member of a large professional organization.
As your leader I am constantly calling upon my own experiences, current learnings and what I see as future expectations for myself as well as you the members. It has been an empowering year so far for me as the 23rd president of the Colorado Springs chapter of EWI. Thank you for all your support and I look forward to our future.

February EWI Meeting
February was National Heart month and as usual EWI was on target with a program at the Antlers Hilton Hotel about Women and Heat Disease presented by Dr. David Greenberg, senior partner with Pikes Peak Cardiology.
Dr. Greenberg encouraged all of us to take charge of our own health. Women usually blow off the symptoms of heart disease, which is the most common cause of death in women. He talked about symptoms, emerging risk factors such as coronary calcium, and HsCRP a blood test that measures chronic inflammation. Dr Greenberg’s handouts were informative and timely. They included the Framingham Risk Scores to determine your ten year risk of having a cardiac event, and the Heart Healthy Mediterranean Diet.
Sandy Gregory, Executive Director of the Heart Association passed out information about Women and Heart Disease. Paulette introduced the new co-chair of the Go Red Educational Day, Carol Walker, CEO of the Medical Society. Carol and her daughter, Diane Johnson from Colorado Springs Utilities are the first mother-daughter team to co-chair Go Red for Women.
County Commissioner, Sallie Clark, and Paulette’s Red Dress Co-Chair from 2005, made a special presentation to Daniels Chevyland for their premiere sponsorship of the event. Elizabeth Daniels and Susan Wilmot accepted the Red Dress Statue. Daniels Chevyland is committed to Women and Heart Disease.
Save the date, Friday, November 3, 2006 at the Antlers Hilton Hotel, 9-3 for the Go Red Educational Day of testing, auction, doctor’s panel and cooking classes. Sponsorships go fast, so call the Heart Association at 635.7688 and be the first to Go Red for Women. The life you save will be yours!

Bea Steahlin's Mother-in-Law, MIMI, passed away. Many of you knew Mimi and knew that at 102 she had lived a full and rich life. There will be a family graveside memorial in a few weeks but Mimi did not want a public service. Please keep Bea and Paul in your thoughts and prayers.
A note of thanks excerps from our scholarship recipients. EWI received two heartfelt handwritten notes of appreciation from Rebecca Tonn saying, Most of all, thank you for three years of incredible support – financial and psychological – which enabled me to achieve my goal. Your kindness and generosity will not be forgotten! Barbara Henry-Quinn saying, Thank you for everything. The dinner, luncheon, and gift certificate were special treats. And Kelly Ferrin said, I feel encouraged and supported by EWI, it really has been such an unexpected blessing and I am very thankful for your influence and personal support of me and my education!
