Sage Woman Herbs

Rep: Valerie Blankenship

Herb shops are a rare breed. “Destination locations” they call us. That’s because someone has to make a special point to stop here. It is not the usual spot where you pick up your groceries, or your drugstore items, for instance. So if you have never used herbs before, why would you make the trip to Sage Woman Herbs? Well, numerous reasons. For example, did you know we have a fragrance bar where you can have an essential oil eye cream, body lotion or other delicious concoction blended especially for you? The cost is generally much less expensive than purchasing something similar from a department store, and we promise to leave out those nasty chemicals and alcohols that irritate and dry your skin.

We offer lots of natural skin-care products, but our featured product line works more on the inside than the outside. As a board certified clinical herbalist, I have spent many hundreds of hours over the past 15 years of business perfecting the Sage Woman Herbs line of products. These 90 products, all 100% herbal formulations, were designed to treat the main health concerns my customers come into the shop asking about. I originally started with about 20 simple formulas, which addressed such health concerns as low blood sugar and high blood pressure, plus several cleanses, a hair and nails stimulator, and a blend that addresses insomnia.

As the years went by, our customers made more demands of us. They wanted formulas to address specific types of headaches, a diabetes formula that really works, and formulas for the different phases of a woman’s hormonal system. In addition to those, I also created “Herp-Ease,” which has helped countless customers get rid of their herpes symptoms, usually forever. Another excellent product that I developed due to customer demand was “Muscle Relief,” a formula that relieves the muscle cramps of fibromyalgia.

Out of all these popular products, our best selling herbal formula is our namesake, “Sage Woman.” This formula works on all of the symptoms that menopausal women suffer from. Like mood swings. And hot flashes. How about heart palpitations? And that low energy perimenopausal women complain of? This formula addresses all of those issues. Husbands stop by all the time to pick up a couple of bottles for their wives. No one wants to go into the holidays or on vacation without a full bottle of the stuff. Now, some women only suffer from hot flashes, not the other symptoms. So I created a formula for them called “Hot Flash.” And we have a different product for women trying to get pregnant, and one for PMS, and even a few others for things like ovarian cysts and endometriosis. After all, we women are complicated creatures.

Men have simpler anatomies. We address their middle-aged tendency towards prostate problems with the popular “Male Support” formula.

As time passed, we began getting customers with more complex health concerns, and some who wanted help weaning off of medications. By that time, I had received three certifications in clinical herbology through the School of Natural Healing, Wild Rose College and David Hoffmann’s famous Therapeutic Herbalism program. It was time to bring more services to my customers. So I began to offer consultations in a private office within the retail shop. This allowed me to give more time and attention to my clients in a relaxed atmosphere. Since I had many years experience in formulating supplements, I was also able to mix special blends for each client, based on his or her particular needs. These days, the majority of my time is split between a busy clinical practice, research and product development. These activities make for an exciting livelihood that is extremely fulfilling to me, and hopefully provides our community with an alternative resource for good health.

Valerie Blankenship is the owner and developer of Sage Woman Herbs, located at 308-A South 8 th Street. The retail shop hours are 10 am – 6 pm Monday – Saturday. Clinic hours are 10:30 am – 5:00 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The Pulse - YOUR VOICE - by Kelly Wood

Inquiry:
Could you explain to me the difference between a Sustaining Member and a Chapter Life Member?

Response:

 A Sustaining Member is: 1. A member in good standing; 2. Retiring from a business or a Member Firm;
3. No longer employed on a full-time basis with any business, governmental agency, non-profit enterprise or association actively engaged in the conduct of business; 4. No voting rights and may not serve as an Officer or Director.

A Life Member is: 1. Not otherwise qualified for membership; 2. A member in good standing for at least ten (10) years; 3. Special meritorious service above and beyond the call of duty to the Chapter; 4. No voting rights and may not serve as an Officer or Director.

Do you have a question or suggestion?

The Your Voice column of the EWI Chapter Pulse was created so that all members have a place to:
ask questions; get answers; give suggestions; let us know what we are doing right; let us know what we could improve upon; but, is not limited to the above.

This is Your Voice.   The best way to do this is to send an email in response to the Chapter Pulse and it will get directed to the Your Voice committee.   The committee will try to respond to all information sent to the committee.   The response will either be published in the Chapter Pulse or to that individual member representative, if more appropriate.

This is your chapter of EWI.   In addition to adhering to our mission statement, we want you to get the most out of EWI. Please send your inquiry to: mailto:stadingwood@earthlink.net

President's Message

Paticipation, Input and Networking

By Linda Williamson

Welcome to all of you who have renewed your memberships for 2005. And of course, a special WELCOME to all the new members joining us for the very first time. The Board is delighted that you have chosen to join EWI.

I am excited to exchange some thoughts with you on the topic of “participation”, “input”, and “networking”. Given the challenge of participation, we constantly face the need to encourage members to get involved with working on committees to impart your fresh ideas, and hear the voices of our members that we’ve not heard from.

It is of particular importance to me to discuss the value of input, not only because it is a topic close to my heart, but because in our everyday lives, input plays an important role in our enthusiasm to grow this organization as well as our own companies. And, what better time to make a fresh commitment than now!

Our goal is to meet the needs of individuals and provide the venue of networking. Networking will encompass us to meet new people. Get involved with our members so you know more than just their names. Get to know who they are. Networking is the key resource that will unlock your maximum potential, personally, professionally, and for your company.

In our effort to “participate”, “input” and “network” we will each develop a more attainable path to success, with a win-win result for all of us.

I wish you fruitful involvement and an enjoyable year.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

February - Heart Disease -
It's Not Just For Men Any More - by Paulette Greenberg

February is Heart Awareness month and thanks to our own members, Dr. Nita Harris, cardiologist with Pikes Peak Cardiology, and facilitator, Paulette Greenberg, Co-Chair of the Red Dress Campaign, the American Heart Association provided EWI its own mini-fair, complete with information booths, carotid artery screenings and presentation by Dr. Harris. A special thanks to Lorri Orwig from the Heart Association for the information booths, and Darrell Griffen, Director of Cardiodiagnostics, and his wonderful staff, for donating their evening to perform the screenings. The screenings are a major detector of strokes. They are expensive and not always covered by insurance, but Cardiodiagnostics donated their equipment, staff, and time for the procedures. During dinner, Dr. Harris explained that heart disease and strokes are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of women over the age of 25. She emphasized being familiar with your own family history, and the following major risk factors for heart disease, which can be prevented, controlled, or treated:

  1. High Blood Pressure (normal being less than 120 systolic over less than 80 diastolic) aka hypertension, which causes your heart and arteries to have to work harder.
  2. High Blood Cholesterol – desirable less than 200; borderline high 200-239; high over 240. Causes plaque buildup, narrowing the blood vessels.
  3. Tobacco smoke – from first and second hand. If you smoke, quit!
  4. Physical inactivity – about 30 minutes each day can reduce risk.
  5. Overweight – increases risk even if no other risk factors exist
  6. Diabetes-routine checkups detect diabetes so it can be treated

In addition Dr. Harris advised of warning signs of heart attacks: discomfort in chest, one or both arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach; shortness of breath; cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Stroke warning signs include sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg (especially one side); sudden confusion; sudden trouble seeing, trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance; sudden severe headache with no known cause. Keep this information handy. Don’t think you are merely over-reacting if one or more of these signs occur; call 911 immediately. Do not drive yourself to the hospital.

Dr. Harris’ partner, Dr. David Greenberg, was also present at our meeting and he provided one more thing for thought. A pediatrician colleague of his recently informed him that beginning the year 2000, we may have a generation of children who will be the first to not survive their parents, due to poor diets and overweight. Indeed, a profound statement.

Thank you to the following members who donated door prizes: Nicola Myers-Murty; Kathy Wallace, Wallace Vision; Georgianna Lee, Old West Cigar & Homebrew; and Dr. Ann Carlisle, Psychologist.

What Does EWI Mean to Me?

by Patty Klase

When first asked to write about what the EWI means to me, my response was that I had not been a member long enough. In retrospect, I feel that my hasty answer overlooked a very important element; that of others having the opportunity to see the EWI through “new eyes”. I have been a member for a year now and in that short amount of time I have learned a lot.

As business ladies, we join organizations with the goal of “growing our businesses”. This is a virtuous and realistic goal. In response to that, I will assure you that these ladies are walking, talking billboards for one another. I have benefited from their support, and am grateful for this.

Further, and more importantly, I have seen love in action. I sit beside Bea Steahlin at the board meetings. I hear these ladies discuss how to tenderly address situations within the organization to bring unity, where severance is suspect. I have heard them discuss how they might avoid yet another necessary increase in fees, only to go forward with what “must be done”. Most of all, however, I have heard them excited to add another beneficiary to our scholarship program. I have seen them donate time at the end of weary days, filled with endless demands at their jobs, in order to make their dreams a reality. Not dreams of self-fulfillment, but of helping other ladies in the community accomplish success and add value to their lives and the lives of their families.

Do they ask of us? “Yes”. Do they sometimes ask more of us than we “think we have time or resources to offer”? Again, “Yes”. Have I ever been asked to participate or contribute in a way that they have not already done themselves (and many times over)? I certainly think not!

I do not see ladies boasting about “who they are” or “what they do”. I see successful women in the business of making contributions to our community in order to cultivate and grow more successful women in business, lending to a stronger, more successful economy in the future.
