President's Message

EWI Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting

by Kathleen O'Leary

Hello, Executive Women – it’s GREAT to be here!

This month I would like to do a little marketing piece about our Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM) that will be held in Orlando, Florida this year. The dates are September 14-16 at the Disney Contemporary Hotel, right on the property of Disney World!

Many world-class speakers for one low price, including the Disney Institute.

You could learn how this will either save time, save money, or make money, i.e. learning more effective ways of increasing teamwork means less time spent reconciling conflicts, dealing with office politics, etc.

You will gain the ability to access programming that can be brought back to the organization.

Connections with vendors, trainers, referral sources, new product or service ideas.

Practical skills development.

Despite gains, women still need extra professional development opportunities and a supportive environment.

EWI is a non-partisan organization, which focuses on issues affecting business professionals in all arenas.

The skills acquired through EWI professional development benefit your entire organization.

The majority of the conference takes place over the weekend, so you’ll only be out of the office 2-3 days.

There will be a Cybercafe available at the conference to allow you to check email.

Cost for the conference is $600 per person plus $175 if you want to attend the Academy of Leadership session. Hotel costs run around $200 per night for double occupancy and the flights are around $300-400. Details about the AOL session topics, the hotel and agenda are found on the corporate web site www.executivewomen.org.

The chapter pays all expenses to send the President and Vice President and one other board member (voted on by the board) to the conference. Your chapter board is heavily considering offering to pay some of these expenses for a few non-board members to attend. The process of selection is yet to be determined but if you are interested in being considered for this benefit please make it known to a board member as soon as you can. Details of the selection process will be announced at the July meeting.

This conference is always well attended and has proven very beneficial to EWI members over the years. This year should be no different being held in such an exciting location with so much to do! It would be worth your while to consider this valuable resource when you are doing your planning for professional growth for the year.

May EWI Meeting

Last month's EWI meeting was held at the Business of the Arts Center in Manitou Springs.  Debra Thornton updated us on the activities of the BAC, which include art shows, theater productions, studio space for artists, and their sales gallery.  The keynote speaker was Dr. Michael DeMarsche, CEO of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.  His presentation covered the new world class exhibits the FAC has brought and continues to bring to Colorado Springs and the opening of the new downtown FAC Modern space.  The group enjoyed the presentation, door prizes and delicious buffet dinner.

EWI Scholarship Recipient Spotlight

Rebecca graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English, with a 3.9 G.P.A., from UCCS in December. She was one of EWI’s scholars, from 2003-2005, and the recipient of the corporate EWI business and career scholarship, in 2004. She says she is happy to be finished with school and will not forget what EWI has done for her. “I want to give back to the community as a member of EWI, assisting other women with scholarships and mentoring.”

Meanwhile, she is sending out her resume and portfolio, searching for a position as a copy writer, business writer, or copy editor, etc. Rebecca has worked at the Ritz Grill since May of 1996, as a bookkeeper, day bartender, and floor manager. While she will miss the Ritz family of employees and clients, she is eager to launch the next phase of her life. Multi-tasking comes naturally to her, as a single mother for twelve years and a full-time student, since 2001. She says she thrives on challenges.

During February of 2006, she had the opportunity of working at The Gazette as a temporary copy editor, quickly learning the Hermes Production System and how to write headlines. She thoroughly enjoyed her experience, and it is a great addition to her resume.

Rebecca is grateful for the support of EWI and anticipates being able to likewise help other non-traditional women, as they strive for a better education. Rebecca can be reached at: 719.510.3333 or beccatonn@yahoo.com.
