Spotlight On...

Colorado Aviation
Kimberly Powell

Since 1999, Colorado Aviation and Discount Fuel have been a family operated cooperation serving as an FBO (Fixed Base Operator) for cooperate and privately owned Jets. Founded by Craig and Kim Powell , what was formerly an aviation college was quickly turned into a mainstream fuel stop for elite jets making their way cross country.

At present, approximately 9,500 business jets and 9,200 business turboprops are in service worldwide, compared with approximately 10,500 commercial jet transports and 7,200 regional turboprop and jet aircraft. Light Commercial and General Aviation also have been rising steadily in the past several years. With traveler aversion to commercial airline travel, private aviation is seen as an increasingly attractive alternative.

So why fly private? Flying privately eliminates many of the hassles and headaches of commercial airline passengers.
In the corporate world, private jets allow the business man to often enjoy enhanced control over schedules, high-quality catered meals, guaranteed luggage arrival, and the ability to bypass the long lines at airport security.

With the hasty demand for fuel and travel, we have come up with an alternate plan to make flying affordable and profitable.
At Colorado Aviation, it is our goal and promise to keep fuel prices below any major FBO in the Rocky Mountain region. With jet fuel raising to almost 6 dollars a gallon, who could afford to travel when it’s on their own dime? Every fuel stop made at Colorado Aviation saves the average customer hundreds to thousands of dollars.

At our FBO we offer Enterprise rental cars on site, limousines/drivers, 5 Star gourmets catering, wireless internet connection, customer lounge, snooze room, WSI weather, and our famous fudge brownies baked fresh in the kitchen every morning. We have over 250,000 square feet of ramp space including taxi ways, as well as 15 tie-down slots for single engine aircraft, a lower ramp for jet engine aircraft and a main hanger sheltering up to eight large jets at a time. With 110,000 sq. feet of individual hangars, we have the largest space for sheltered aircraft in Colorado Springs . Contracted by Conoco Phillips , we offer JET fuel as well as 100LL AV fuel. Two JET fuel trucks containing 5,000 gallons each are used daily in fueling jet-aircraft as they make their way cross country.

Two underground fuel tanks rest below our self serve pump containing 12,000 gallons of 100LL and JET -A each.

At Colorado Aviation, we make it our number one priority to have an edge over our competitors, the Colorado Jet Center . Fuel prices are monitored on a daily basis to ensure our customers pay the lowest price. We take great pride in our line service, offering the fastest quick turns for jet cliental. Fuel truck stand by ready, vehicles are in position and all accommodations are pre-arranged.

For the past six years we have been the little guy on the field. Through word of mouth and extensive advertisement, our FBO operation has become one of the most well known fuel stops in mid-America. Each month brings new cliental and new fuel sale averages. We are blessed to have made it thus far, and look forward to new possibilities. 719.591.2065/powellkd@aol.com

President's Message

Thanks for a Successful
2006 EWI Scholastic Classic!

by Kay Atwood

It was a beautiful day at Kissing Camels Club for our 4 th Annual EWI Scholastic Classic Golf Tournament! The volunteers got there early to place the tee favor bags filled with great items donated by all of you, in each cart. The purple embroidered golf towels, donated by Daniels Chevyland were draped over the seat and looked very colorful.

92 golfers began to arrive to register and enjoy the coffee and muffins. Some practiced at the driving range, while others went to the Putting Challenge sponsored by ENT Federal Credit Union. Barb Winter was there along with our beautiful Putting Princesses, Kathy Kelly and Kelly Wood – adorned with their tiaras. Paul Treul of Hub Car Wash & Diner won the putting contest.

Each team was photographed and a copy was sent later as a souvenir. At our luncheon, we awarded 1 st prize of a $100 certificate per player to be spent in the Pro Shop, 2 nd prize of $75 per player, and 3 rd prize of $50 per player. Results are as follows:

1 st Place - The Woodford Team
2 nd Place – Wells Fargo
3 rd Place – ReMax

The Longest Drive went to Mike Peters and the Closest to the Pin was Jolene Freeman. Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin winners won a Chevy for the weekend filled with gas. Our door prizes were incredible!! We had a night for two at The Broadmoor, a golf travel bag and a putter, donated by Sinton Dairy, a beautiful gift basket from Cachet Basket, dozens of golf balls, and oil & lube certificates from Daniels Chevyland, etc. People seemed disappointed when the luncheon and prize distribution was over. There were many happy faces.

It was all made possible by our EWI members. From the start, Debbie Tuzel designed our wonderful “Save the Date” postcards. Then Joan Pierce developed a database to be used for mailing the postcards and letters for sponsors. Lorrie Todd got our website updated for people to register for the golf tournament. Sally Seidlitz printed the postcards, brochures and posters, then printed the photos from the tournament. Kathy Kelly got the items for the tee favor bags, thanks to donations from many of our members. We all called to find sponsors for the holes and door prizes, which contributed greatly to our profit.

Lane Affiliated Companies, Inc.(Pepsi), Acordia of Colorado and The Gazette became Master Level sponsors of $1,000 each. Wells Fargo was a Bachelor’s sponsor of $500. The Hub Car Wash & Diner contributed advertising on the radio. There was a full-page color spread about the event in the Colorado Springs Business Journal.

Thanks to the golf committee! Pat Cooper, Kathy Kelly, Caroline Easton, Marti Hartman, Joan Pierce, Jean Roblewsky, Joan Saucerman, Verna Severson, Debbie Tuzel, and Susan Wilmot.

Bea and I couldn’t have done it without the committee and our members. If you weren’t involved this year, we encourage you to get involved next year. Our goal is to have a 100% contribution from the membership. This year 65% participated in some way. You don’t have to golf to be involved, because the money raised goes to help people in our community attend college and have a way to make a living . So far, it looks like we raised $8,500.00 – enough for several scholarships. Thank you for making this year’s fundraiser a huge success!
