Spotlight On...

Focus on EWI

by Kathleen O'Leary
Vice President/President Elect

Here are some highlights from the round table discussions held at the May Chapter meeting. More to come at future meetings where we will be using this information to help us form the vision for the 2005-2006 board:

Main reason for joining: business networking; connecting with other women; forming relationships and friendships; Wanda made me; liked the part about the scholarship being a focus of chapter; a friend invited me; interesting women involved in our chapter.

How has that changed? Has evolved from business networking into friendships and support system; I am learning and growing from the other women.

Ideas for promoting increased visibility in community: press releases in all local publications announcing such things as: golf tournament; scholarship recipients and their biographies; information about our chapter including Athena Award recipients being members; spotlighting member firms and reps; having teams within chapter to participate in local events; having teams to volunteer for charities; etc.; adopt something (like a median).

Ideas for improving your EWI experience: have more networking time; partner with other organizations; have a mentor or Big Sis to help new members; need to have professional development sessions; have all members introduced at each meeting.

How to encourage involvement on committees: by asking members personally; advertise what needs to be done and the time commitment; have new members assigned to someone on membership committee to encourage involvement.

If you are interested in serving on the 2005-2006 board or a committee, please contact Kathleen O’Leary by email, or phone 228-3024. We would love to have you! Itās a great way to form relationships!!

Get Ready to Flaunt Your Business and Talents!!

This year the Cavalcade of Firms has been scheduled for our October 12th meeting at a new and exciting location, The Paragon Culinary Institute, located at Fillmore and I-25. We will enjoy a chef prepared buffet in a very unique jazz club and ballroom setting! For newcomers to EWI, the Cavalcade is basically our own Mini Trade Show. Members who wish to participate in “show and tell” set up booths to showcase, or FLAUNT, their business. It’s a great opportunity to get information to and from our membership, and whether you have a booth, or you choose to stroll and take everything in, it makes for a wonderful evening. For more information about reserving a booth, email Beth Alexander, or call her at 593-9458, or watch for sign-up sheets that will be distributed in the coming months.

Annual EWI LCAM Conference

Hear ye, hear ye! Calling all EWI Colorado Springs Chapter representatives. The 2005 LCAM (Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting) is fast approaching, and we need YOU to attend.

The EWI LCAM is always a great experience. Not only do you get to travel to another city and meet EWI members from all over the country (and world), but there are awesome speakers, workshops, dinners, tours, and a truly unique adventure that only EWI can offer.

Check out the website and see what is being offered this year in Salt Lake City -- you should also have recently received the LCAM brochure. EWI LCAM Brochure

Grand America Hotel, the host hotel is primo (rated 5 diamonds). This is truly your opportunity to experience a lovely facility for an affordable price (especially if you can share a room with one of your fellow EWI reps)!

We will be taking nominations at the July chapter meeting for one member firm reps’ registration, hotel and travel to be paid for by the Chapter. There will be a ballot box when you check in – you can nominate yourself or someone else! We’ll announce the winner at the end of the meeting that night.

I am in charge of getting our chapter organized for LCAM this year, and we'd love to have you join us! Please shoot me a quick e-mail – Kathleen O'Leary - if you have even the SLIGHTEST interest in attending, or if you have already decided that you are attending.

President's Message

Hot Fun in
the Summertime

by Linda Williamson

Kissing Camels Club…perfect location for our Third Annual EWI Scholastic Classic Golf Tournament. Our thanks to Caroline Easton, Sustaining Member, for bringing us to this gorgeous setting.

Exceptional location, stunning views, weather cooperating, program running smoothly, and scrumptious food. What more could we have asked for?

It was a beautiful morning for playing golf, or in my case, hacking at golf. Admiring the beautiful surroundings and meeting new people was also a highlight of the day. It was a pleasure golfing with Wendy Henry, BKD, and getting to know her. I actually witnessed how this EWI connection thing works. Wendy met new member Kathleen Bosley Kershaw, Re/Max Properties, and made an appointment with her to show her house. Imagine that…doing business on the golf course. It was a pleasure to see so many of you participating in this event and enjoying the spectacular luncheon.

This event was truly a jovial time for all who attended, and judging by the number of mulligans I bought to excuse my golf errors, my partners had an enjoyable golf day.

I wish to extend my thanks to the tournament committee and all EWI members that participated and gave of their time, talents, advertising, labor, donations, and door prizes to make this event a success. My hat is off to you ALL!

And last, but certainly not least, please join me in thanking committee chair, Pat Cooper, World Savings, for the many hours she contributed to bring this 2005 Golf Tournament to completion.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

June - EWI Golf Tournament Review

by Ways and Means Chairman, Pat Cooper

It was another successful Scholastic Golf Tournament thanks to our members, sponsors, donors and payers. This year our Third Annual Scholastic Golf Tournament raised approximately $11,000 with 71 players. Yes, we will be able to continue with our ASIST scholarship recipients and our organization will continue to function as a premier Women’s Executive Organization for our community.

The winners of this years’ golf tournament were: 1st Place Team: World Savings -- Brad Vermilyea, Gary Riley, Frank Lockridge and Pat Cooper; 2nd Place Team: Seagate-Express-3 -- Wayne Founey, Gariel Lawson, May Lou Risinger and Matt Davis; 3rd Place Team: Wells Fargo -- Andy Davis, Bob Latzy, Mike Alberico and John Davis. Longest Drive: Female - Vanessa Moorman; and Male - Brad Vermilyea. Closest to the pin 1st place was Dale Lashley and 2nd place was Ryan Severson.

This year, Susan Wilmont, Daniels Chevyland, suggested several new contests whereby their winners won “A Chevy vehicle to drive for the Weekend” . Thanks, Susan, our golfers were very pleased with the change. The luncheon and club accommodations were first class, so a special thank you to Caroline Easton, Sustaining, for coordinating the details.

The following companies are recognized for the generous sponsorships: Master Level - Lane Affiliated Companies (Pepsi); Bachelor Level - The Broadmoor Hotel; Ready Care Industries; Wells Fargo Private Client Services; Ent Federal Credit Union. Other sponsors: Accent Photo Imaging; The Hub Car Wash & Diner; The Gazette. The generous support of these firms enable us to continue with our scholarship awards.

Again, thanks to all for a successful Third Annual Scholastic Golf Tournament.

What Does EWI Mean to Me?

by Demetra Shelton

I was impressed with EWI from the very start. From my first meeting, I saw a group of professional women who have worked very hard to be where they are. It was obvious that these women were accustomed to driving their own careers and choices by hard work. There were no free rides here and I appreciate that kind of work ethic. The obvious self-respect and dignity in which these women carried themselves was immediately apparent and that was inspirational. I realized by being a part of this organization and surrounding myself with these high-caliber women I would be holding myself to a higher standard of professionalism and accountability. I think it is important to work toward our higher being on this journey and one should surround oneself with those who would inspire that work toward becoming the higher self.

On a lighter note, (shwew, didn’t mean to get so philosophical there, I scared myself a little). Quite honestly, there are reasons enough to fill pages as to why I love being a part of EWI. There is nothing I love to see more than women edifying women. I do think lifting each other up is a responsibility that belongs to each of us, and that is why I most respect the mission of EWI. I am proud of our scholarship fund and the privilege of assisting a sister to her goals. We all need a little help sometime.

But what do I love most about EWI? My crazy, whacky friends and the fact that a meeting really should not occur without a fine glass of wine. What would be the point of that?

I am so glad to be back!!
