Spotlight On...

Purple Mountain Coffee

Pat Kreuser, Owner

Linda Bloom

Kathleen Flobeck

Purple Mountain Coffee, LLC opened its doors on May 13, 2000 at 7601 N. Union Blvd. - in the Safeway shopping center.  The retail location offers a full range of espresso drinks, coffee, teas, smoothies and ice cream based 'frappes'.  In addition, we have a variety of pastries and candies.

We were actually incorporated in 1997, but the vision at that time had not solidified.  Some thought was given to an internet business using various roasters throughout the country as suppliers, another approach considered was home coffee demonstrations and a third concept was home delivery.  As a result of researching our various ideas, Pat Kreuser attended roasting training - and the business focus started to take shape.

Today the business is a Micro-Roaster and Espresso Bar.  We have also continued to pursue the concept of Home Delivery.  The working business partners are Linda Bloom and Pat Kreuser.  Last Spring, Kathryn Flobeck joined the team as an Account Executive with the primary goal of wholesale bean sales.

Being a bean business, we provide a variety of roasted coffee beans.  We use the old European barrel roasting method.  Most of the beans tend towards a darker roast.  The coffee beans are from all over the world - the Americas, Indonesia and Africa.  In addition to varietals, we offer flavored coffee beans such as Coconut Creme, Southern Pecan and Pumpkin - just to mention a few.

The wholesale business has grown significantly during this past year due to Kathryn's efforts.  At this time, you can find Purple Mountain Coffee in over 20 locations which include, Garden of the Gods Visitor's Center, Dillard's and Cachet Baskets.

In addition, we have very ambitious plans for the Home Delivery Program. During 2004, it is our goal to bring fresh roasted coffee to your door and save you time.

For questions or additional information regarding Purple Mountain please contact Pat, Linda or Kathryn - or visit our website at www.purplemountaincoffee.com.

President's Message

Have you ever wondered?

By Marti Hartman

Where's my money going? Will we get new directories?  Who gets the scholarships? How much does a scholarship recipient receive?  What the heck was that "Texas Basket Thing"?

I've been a rep since 1990 and couldn't answer these questions without some digging around.  (I'm currently in therapy for the traumatic after-effects of the test, and my therapist is guardedly optimistic I'll recover).

So here's some information in case you, too, are wondering.

YOUR MONEY

One hundred dollars of each rep's dues is sent to EWI Corporate.  That money is the corporate operating fund. An additional $15 from each firm is for "Business Career Development Program" (B/C/DP), which is currently two different types of scholarships (EWISP and ASIST), and International Philanthropy (currently "Reading Rallies" to promote literacy).  Visit the website - www.executivewomen.org for lots more information on the Corporate role.

The remaining dues stay here for chapter operations.  Money collected each meeting for door prizes, and money collected at fund-raisers (currently the golf tournament) is for scholarships.  Our goal is to have enough money in the scholarship fund to be self-supporting so we don't spend so much effort fund-raising and can focus more on "promoting member firms, and enhancing personal and professional development".

LOCAL DIRECTORY

We have a committee working to get one published.  It's a huge job!  We hope to have it done this year, but it may be next year. We need assistance with publishing the directory. If anyone would like to see a directory created sooner rater than later, please contact Cathie John - 228-3011.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Local - Our scholarships are awarded locally at a current maximum of $6000 per year.  This year we have two scholarship recipients; each will receive $1500 per semester.

Corporate - Corporate awards scholarships nationally and throughout the world.

THAT "TEXAS BASKET THING"

Our chapter donated a basket stuffed full of items donated by Colorado Springs chapter members. The basket was taken to the 2003 Annual Meeting and Leadership Conference in September, and benefited Corporate B/C/DP.  Tickets were sold at local chapters and at the Annual Meeting.  Several other chapters donated items as well (ours was one of the best!).

The winner of the Colorado Springs basket was from Grapevine, Texas.

THANK YOU to Paulette Greenberg for caring enough to ask!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Last Month's Meeting Summary   by Kathy Kelly

The January meeting was held at the Garden of the Gods Country Club, whose staff did an excellent job with the food and drink. Thanks to Carolines Easton and Nelson for setting up this meeting in this beautiful location.  Dr. Marijane Paulsen, Professor Emeritus of Pikes Peak Community College, was our speaker.  She began our new year with a witty and humorous twist on "How to Have A LOUSY Year".  One of our favorites on her list, for example, revolved around a personal experience at a party at the home of her friend, Fran.  Marijane was leaving the party and accidentally bumped into a table, knocking over a vase and plant.  In the moments it took for the vase to hit the floor, Marijane traveled back in time to her childhood and berated herself for everything from clumsiness then (despite ballet lessons provided by her parents)  to every failed accomplishment throughout her adult life.  The vase hit the floor.  All this self criticism from a gifted woman.  Her husband, however, merely stated to the hostess, "Fran, your fern fell!"  The message:  women think they must be everything, everywhere at all times.  As always, Marijane left us with a valuable lesson - LIGHTEN UP - and Lots of Laughter!  Thank you, Marijane!  We love you!

No Photos This Month - sorry!

Did You Know?

by Wanda Reaves

This EWI member, at the age of thirty set several goals and gave herself ten years to achieve them.  And she did it!  Her goal to overcome a fear of water she reached with the help of YMCA classes for those terrified of water. Not only did she overcome that fear, she is now an accomplished scuba diver!  The goals to get her teeth fixed, get contacts and her ears pierced were accomplished.  She set a goal to learn how to pamper herself now and then.  With that she has gone to health spas like La Casa, Plantation and 10,000 Waves to learn to better take care of herself.  Another item on her list of goals was to ride in a glider.  She did that one on her fortieth birthday.

Her professional life is one of steady accomplishments since she graduated from Colorado State University where she received her degree in Business Administration.  Her first job was with Colorado Interstate Gas where she started in 1972 as personnel assistant and worked her way up to become Human Resources Manager.  And that is just a part of the story.

To begin at the beginning she was adopted by military parents in Tokyo, Japan.

They returned to the United States after her father, a pilot, was shot down and injured. She was one year old. Greeley was their home where she attended school through the fourth grade.  After attending a large school in Denver for the next four years her family moved to Hodgkin, Colorado a small town on the western slope where the oil shale industry was beginning to take off.  She didn't go kicking and screaming but close to that!  It's a tribute to her adaptability that while being the new kid in the school she still graduated as salutatorian in a graduating class of forty-two students.  She has always been appreciative of one particular Hodgkin teacher who inspired her.

She moved her mother from Hodgkin to Colorado Springs in 1994 to be closer to her with her health problems.  She was extremely close to her mother who passed away about a year ago here in the Springs.  Her father had passed away many years ago from his injuries.

She and her husband David have a beautiful daughter named Shelby.  Shelby is almost twelve years old and attends school in Manitou Springs.  David retired after selling a successful business and is now Mr. Mom to Shelby.  They have three cats and one fish rounding out the family.

One of her goals was to read more.  She names Patricia Cornwell as one of her favorite authors.  She recently enjoyed The Da Vinci Code and is now reading Cold Mountain.

This EWI member is an Athena Award winner and has served our community and state in many capacities.  She was a member of the Colorado State University Alumni Association for six years and was president of that Association for one year. Other boards and committees that she has served on are:  Goodwill Board, Metro Y Board, Boy Scout Board, Western Mining Museum Board and the County Personnel Committee.

Her travels are generally centered on scuba diving.  Places like Cozumel, Belize and St. Martin have provided some of her most enjoyable scuba diving.  She and David have a condo in Hawaii that they travel to each summer.  They ski in the winter and Shelby is now skiing with them.

She wouldn't let me print her most embarrassing moment but the second most embarrassing was pretty impressive.  Just suffice it to say that stuffing Kleenex in your bra to add "oomph" is not always a good idea.  It sometimes creeps out!

She has a people philosophy that everyone has something to offer in life.  That philosophy has helped her in her field as people with whom she has worked over the years continue to maintain contact with her.

She is now with the successful Ent Federal Credit Union corporate team as Vice-President of Human Resources.

Now you have probably guessed it and you are right!  Click here to find out.

Announcements

ATTENTION, EWIers!!!  At our March meeting, back by popular demand, we are having our Firm Showcase night!  Sign up for a booth NOW with Jerry Jo Shires, the coordinator for this fabulous event.  This is our own women's tradeshow, and a super chance to showcase your firm or company!!  Let EWI know what you do!  There will be door prizes, give-aways, and FUN!  Bring friends to this meeting.  It will be great!

Wanda Reaves wants to remind EWI members that they can continue to help revitalize and green up the mountain scars by recycling their used newspapers at the Gazette's drop off container on Pikes Peak Ave., just west of Institute (very close to the Gazette offices).
