President's Message
Tradition
by Kathleen O'Leary
|
|
Hello, Executive Women – it’s GREAT to be here!
The holidays are here again and it’s time for celebration! It’s also a time for traditions and there are many! Tradition can be defined as: the passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation or a set of such customs and usages viewed as a coherent body of precedents influencing the present.
Within EWI what we do each year is influenced greatly by our customs and culture that have been passed on to us from past members and board members. For example, we have developed a culture of compassion for others-note the past donations to Silver Key, Care and Share, Urban Peak and the Women’s Resource Agency and of course our scholarships to women in transition.
We have developed a traditional and open culture where women can come in and learn new skills and new ways to promote themselves and their companies. We encourage the passing of traditions to incoming boards-sharing of food and wine and fellowship.
The EWI tradition I am most thankful for is the tradition of attracting some of the most incredible women in our beautiful city to our chapter. We have a history of having a membership that reflects a diverse economy, varying of sizes of companies, and many independent business owners. The high level of integrity and intellect is incomparable. I believe we have all had the benefit of meeting some pretty amazing and very supportive women at our chapter meetings.
For this tradition I am very thankful and am truly humbled to be your president. In this holiday season of celebrations and traditions I say SLAINTE, that’s CHEERS in Gaelic, to all of you!

November EWI Meeting
How do you get 70 very chatty women become so quiet that you could hear a pin drop? You get them to listen to the powerful message of Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care, PPHPC, which was delivered by Martha Barton, President and CEO of PPH and Robin McGrath, Chief Operating Officer.
The evening’s event was held on the fifth floor of the Penrose-St. Francis Health Center Building on East Pikes Peak Avenue. It is a beautiful setting that looks over the city of Colorado Springs and it was so clear and beautiful out that all of us took in the magnificent backdrop of Pikes Peak and the city twinkling brightly below! The networking started with a wonderful variety of wines. The delectable dinner was prepared by Chef Greg Owens with Nutrition Services of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. Kathleen O’Leary started off the meeting with some business matters and then Susan Davis from Wells Fargo Bank, a member of the EWI Board, and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Pikes Peak Hospice Foundation introduced the speaker, Martha Barton.
Martha Barton told a room full of women the importance of quality end of life care and that the celebration of death is as important as the celebration of birth. She is very passionate about her work and Pikes Peak Hospice. She takes the leadership role she has done for 20 years very seriously. She truly believes that every day of life matters and made every woman that night feel that emotion. So much so that there was not many dry eyes after Martha spoke to all of us.
What we heard is that planning for end of life care is every bit as important to the emotional well being of the family, perhaps even more so. Many of us have seen too many people devastated by the emotional impact of the passing of a suffering loved one. We learned that hospice can help to buffer that crucial period in all of our lives and can do much to ease that critical transition for a family and to allow the family member to pass away with dignity, comfort and surrounded by love.
Hospice is not a place you go to die. It’s not even a place, really. Rather it’s a constellation of care services for the individual and the family facing a life ending illness or condition. These services include palliative care, to make less tense or severe, by an interdisciplinary team headed by licensed physicians specializing in a treatment of pain and symptom management. Emotional, spiritual and educational counseling help the family and the member to cope with grief and sense of impending loss. These kinds of services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can be given in the home, at a long term facility, or in the hospice residence itself on the fourth floor of St. Francis Health Center. And it involves trained caregivers, both professional and volunteer, who can be with the loved one to free the family caregivers for a spell away from home.
It doesn’t end with the passing of the loved one. Quality hospice also means caring for the family during bereavement, marking those special first anniversaries that can be so wrenching in the aftermath of death with special attention and caring.
Accessing hospice is usually done through your physician and assessment nurses will visit to assess the needs of the patient and the family. Many, in fact most, hospice services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurances.
Saying that death is a natural part of life doesn’t make it one bit easier when that inevitable time comes. Acceptance comes hard, both for the patient and for the family. Doing what you can to anticipate these kinds of contingencies, especially for those families who know that they are or soon will be facing terminal illnesses, can be a positive first step. These unique services are designed to provide physical, emotional and spiritual comfort for those dying and those who are grieving in our community. Now is the time for all of us to investigate, to know more and try to understand more about hospice. And it’s not just any hospice, but our community-based non-profit hospice in Colorado Springs for the past 25 years, Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care!
If you want to learn more about Pikes Peak Hospice and Palliative Care or how you can give of your time or talent, please contact Susan Davis. If anyone is interested in using Chef Greg Owens services, he can be reached at 776-8477.

EWI ACADEMY ONLINE
Wendy Cowley, EWI Professional Development Director
In response to the need for more professional development expressed by our members, EWI started our Certified Professional Leader online learning program last year. The program has the endorsement of Robert Morris University and includes a suite of classes from Peter Drucker, Tom Peters, and American Management Association. We have 13 representatives who have successfully completed the program and another 36 currently enrolled.
The course is all online, accessible from any computer. Learning is self-paced for one year. Each of the 15 lessons take about one hour to complete and course materials can be viewed multiple times if needed.
This program is not only available to EWI representatives but to any member firm employee. Omaha Public Power District, a member firm of the Omaha Chapter, was so impressed with the program that they included EWI’s Academy Online as part of their training this year. We know you and others in your firm will want to take advantage of this self-paced learning opportunity.
Therefore, we are pleased to offer special group pricing during December. Register five employees at the price of $299, just under $20 per hour of training, and the sixth registration is free.
Additional information can be found on our website at www.executivewomen.org under professional development.
Those interested in registering should send an email to Suzette Smith, Education Services Coordinator, at suzette@executivewomen.org.
We look forward to seeing you in e-class!
