October's Big Event
Get Ready to Flaunt Your Business and Talents!!

This year the Cavalcade of Firms is scheduled for our October 12th meeting at a new and exciting location, The Paragon Culinary Institute, located at Fillmore and I-25. We will enjoy a chef prepared buffet in a very unique jazz club and ballroom setting! For newcomers to EWI, the Cavalcade is basically our own Mini Trade Show. Members who wish to participate in “show and tell” set up booths to showcase, or FLAUNT, their business. It’s a great opportunity to get information to and from our membership, and whether you have a booth, or you choose to stroll and take everything in, it makes for a wonderful evening. For more information about reserving a booth, email Beth Alexander, or call her at 593-9458, or watch for sign-up sheets that will be distributed in the coming months.

President's Message

Perceptions
and
Expectations

by Linda Williamson

Thanks to many of you for bringing guests to our meetings. Obviously these are people you feel could benefit from being part of our organization, as well as your enjoyment in being with them. I contemplated the reasons why we don’t see them again, and why some of you we don’t see often.

Guest service is what makes The Broadmoor Hotel what it is. I propose that we approach growth in our organization by using the same formula as the Broadmoor:

"Perceptions minus Expectations = Guest Return”

At The Broadmoor, we define “perceptions” as how we are viewed by the guest following a guest experience. We define "expectations” as how the guest views us before a guest experience.

If we want to be truly exceptional, then the guest’s perception will be much greater than their expectation. This will bring guests from satisfaction to loyalty. When our service is so great that our guests become loyal, they keep returning and our business grows.

Please know that your incoming President, Kathleen O'Leary, and your Board want to know your expectations. Kathleen is proactively working on the information submitted with the recent EWI survey.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

July - Wine Making and Zoo Happenings - Georgie Lee

What a great meeting we had at the beautiful Cheyenne Mountain Zoo on a warm summer night, enjoying the animals and drinking homemade wine.

Now wait, the zoo doesn't serve wine! Georgianna Lee from Old West Homebrew & Cigar provided two delicious wines that she, the EWI board, and other members made especially for this meeting.

Who would have thought that the wine we were served was actually homemade? Yes, home winemaking has come a long way from the wine Grandpa use to make. Georgie explained how the home winemaking industry has upgraded their products to produce high quality wines for a fraction of the cost for a comparable commercial wine. Complete wine ingredient kits are now available from grape juices of Australia, British Columbia, California, Chile, France, Germany, Italy and the United States.

Why make your own wine? One reason can be the wine headache that comes on quickly which is usually the result of sensitivity to the sulfites necessary to stabilize the wine. Due to that factor, people make their own wine because homemade wine contains about only 20 to 30% of the amount of sulfites compared to what is used in commercially produced wines. AND winemaking is very easy and economical -- cost of $2.50 to $4.00 per bottle, with a start up cost of $89.95 for all the equipment. Wine ingredient kits average about $50.00 to$100.00 to make 6 gallons and yield 28 to 30 bottles of wine. You can also make wines using fresh fruits from local farms and markets.

The process started at our November board meeting taking about a half hour to get everything sanitized and mixed to start the fermentation. Two weeks later Georgie transferred the wines into the 6 gallon glass jugs for the secondary stage. Two months later the wines were again transferred at which time clearing additives and the stabilizer was added to finish the wine. With the wine ready to bottle in June, everyone got involved with the sanitizing of the bottles, filling and corking. Now the best part of the bottling process is that we had to try the wine to make sure it was going to be okay to serve our members.

EWI artist, Kathy Wallace of WallaceVision, designed the labels for each of the wines. Kathy's artwork complimented each wine. Labeling and dressing the bottles can really give the wine your personal touch and Old West has many beautiful labels from which to choose.

Georgie has extended a 10% discount to all EWI members -- please be sure to let her staff know that you are an EWI member.

Four bottles of wine were auctioned off after the presentation to benefit our scholarship fundraising. Thanks to all our wild bidders for your generous contributions.

Our own Cheyenne Mountain Zoo representative, Deb Muehleisen, was a gracious host, providing a beautiful setting for us at the African Rift Safari Lodge, an update on happenings at the Zoo, and followed by a visit to their newest guest, the White Lion.

Thank you to Todd of Wildthings Catering at the Zoo for the delicious buffet. Door prizes were provided by: Kim Powell (Colorado Aviation), Joan Pierce (Accent Photo) and Jane Marshall (Pioneer Astro Industries).
