Spotlight On...
Wilhelm Monument Company
Rep: Judy Wilhelm
Judy, and husband Dick, both natives of Colorado Springs and whose families date to the 1880's in this area, manage Wilhelm Monument Company in the legacy of its 1940's founders, Marie and Bud Wilhelm.
From an early mission to provide quality monuments at the most competitive prices – and survive, the company now has a variety of markets, products, and services. Many of these are natural extensions of capability and a result of changing economic, competitive, and social conditions. Here are some of the products that we have completed in recent years:
Neighborhood entrance signs in stone or wood for companies such as Pulte Homes, Classic Homes, Masterbilt Homes, GTI, and others.
Civic memorials at Fort Carson, Peterson Air Base, the Air Force Academy, Memorial Park, and elsewhere. Examples include work on the Kit Carson Memorial at Fort Carson, and just last week the installation of a memorial to US Medal of Honor recipients at Shriever AFB.
Municipal memorials such as work on the downtown dedication memorials for Stratton, Penrose, Hank, and the cornerstone of Colorado Springs.
Fund-raising projects utilizing engraved bricks and stone pavers or bronze for organizations such as the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and a wide variety of schools and not-for-profits.
Church memorial gardens and dedications, including granite and bronze projects at such churches as Grace Episcopal, First United Methodist, St. Paul’s Catholic, and the list goes on: address rocks, plaques, markers and pet memorials.
Other projects: Colorado College flagpole restoration; granite ice skate at the Broadmoor Hotel; plaque restoration for the Carriage Museum; cornerstones, stone benches and park projects.
Our focus is still to provide quality and value in the remembrance of loved ones through memorials and monuments. In offering this service, Wilhelm Monument Company has become the industry leader in Southern Colorado.

Judy Wilhelm, a 1975 graduate of Colorado State University, has been involved in the business as managing partner since 1997. Judy has had a wide range of Community involvements, including: Newborn Hope; National Charity League; Colorado Springs Executives Association; St. Paul’s Parish; Pasta in the Park; tennis and golf. Judy and husband Dick have two children. Rick (23) is a graduate of Colorado University, and Libby (19) is a sophomore at Colorado University.

President's Message
Moved, Touched or Inspired?

Can you be moved, touched, or inspired?
We are only two months away from our Annual EWI Golf Tournament event. As you know, it is our major fundraiser.
EWI's mission is to help women in transition who desire an education that would afford them a better life for themselves and their children. I am always inspired by the determination and drive these ladies have and it makes me feel good to be a part of such an awesome event.
A fundraiser such as this will allow us to continue our EWI ASIST (Adult Students In Scholastic Transition) scholarships. These scholarships to non-traditional students help the recipient's achieve what may have been an "impossible dream," which truly impacts their family's future.
Many of you golfers are familiar with the old adage, "if you're on time, you're late". It's time we start thinking about how we are going to participate. Wouldn't it be an awesome golf tournament if:
every member came;
each company gave something;
every hole was sponsored;
we had 72 golfers, or better yet, 144 golfers.
Besides fundraising, the networking, and the plain fun everyone has, it is worth getting involved. I witness the joy and excitement at our monthly meetings when everyone is engaged in meaningful interactions. Now imagine that excitement magnified by simply committing yourselves to four or five hours to help pull this fundraiser together.
I can only imagine the excitement of Pat Cooper, and her committee, if we were all ready to sign up to play golf, donate door prizes, or to sponsor holes.

March - Exec Night at The Hub -

Poodle skirts, pony tails, rolled up jeans, white shirts, a little bit of leather and even a Harley! Have I traveled back in time to the 1950’s?
The March EWI meeting was hosted by The Hub Carwash and Diner, owned and operated by Harry and our very own Diane McCreary. Due to an unexpected turn of events, Diane had to make an emergency trip out of town to tend to her Mother who was ill.
The evening was a delightful blend of great retro music, delicious food, a preview of The Hub and EWI Golf Tournament ad that will air on 92.9 KSPZ, and an entertaining and insightful presentation on how one transitions from the fast-lane corporate rat race to retirement, only to become owners of a Mom and Pop business without really trying…or should we say trying, and then trying again.
Harry made us both laugh, and sigh with sympathy, as he described a life of corporate jets, living out of suitcases, elegant dining and little time to rest, only to feel “guilty” about spending time with his family when the opportunity arose. He described Diane’s years of service, raising a family in his absence and being on call 24/7 to host and entertain house guests with very little notice.
Roll the clock forward 25 years. Ahhh, retirement! Right! Harry and Diane’s idea of retirement was to start their own business. Harry held a love of cars and racing in his heart from his pre-corporate world days. Why not open a business that would allow him to revisit those times. The “plan” was to open a full service carwash to cater to the 18,000 techies in the Colorado Springs business community and provide the diner and gift shop as something to do while they waited for their shiny, clean cars. With the layoff of 8,000 IT employees, a draught, and almost 100% turn over in staff during the first year of operation, Harry and Diane experienced a crash course in “how not to succeed in business”. Not so fast. Why not turn the plan inside out and promote a diner (everybody’s gotta eat) that allows you to have your car washed and/or detailed while you eat and browse the gift shop. Sweet success. But the story doesn’t end here.
Now a word from the Mike Anderson, The Hub Diner manager: Mike was nervous about making a change in his career. He was accustomed to working with the top-notch hotels in the industry. And, working for a husband and wife team? What was he thinking? He had seen enough to know it was risky business. Mike soon found out, however, with Harry and Diane it was different. They established strong lines of demarcation. Harry runs the car wash and Diane runs the diner and gift shop. They show respect for the fact that Mike is the manager and if they have issues with one another’s service area, they allow Mike to be the liaison to address employee and other issues. Harry and Diane showed compassion when personal tragedy struck Mike’s family and time was needed away from the work environment. They went beyond generosity when he needed a vehicle and loaned him an auto, not for a few days, but several months. To put it in Mike’s words, “I am very happy working here”.
